How to play basketball guard

Scoring Guard (SG)

Shooting Guard (SG), by the meaning of the word, it is easy to know that his main task on the court is to score. He is the second leading scorer on the court after the small forward, but he doesn't need to practice his one-two punch because he is often helped by his teammates to find the openings and shoot. But because of that, his accuracy and consistency from beyond the arc has to be very good.

A point guard often has to do two things, the first is to have a very good gap to shoot the outside, so his accuracy and stability must be good, otherwise teammates have to work hard to block out a good opportunity, but can not shoot into the words, the team's morale and confidence in the big blow. The second is to find a gap in the small gaps to shoot outside, so his shot speed should be fast. A good point guard can not expect every time there is such a good gap, should be able to find an opportunity to shoot in a very short period of time, and the hit rate should also have a certain level, so then, in order to let the enemy's defense to have some fear, must be pulled away from the circle of defense, and more conducive to the teammates in the penalty box offense.

The point guard's shooting percentage must be very high. Not really. Because although we hope that he has a better accuracy, but do not forget that the distance of his shots are often quite far away, we can not hope that a shooter to shoot from the outside to be more accurate than the people under the basket to hit the boards is also high! What's more, point guards sometimes have to find their own opportunities to take a single shot, or find an opening in the gap, so it's understandable that his hitting percentage won't be too high. Generally speaking, 47%, 48% is not bad, more than 50% is the best choice.

Next, let's take a look at some representative point guards! Hornacek (Jeff Hornacek) can be regarded as a very typical point guard, his outside shot is fast and steady, the range can be close to far, every angle can be shot, and the hitting rate has always been a certain level. In addition, he also has the ability to cut, if necessary, in the cut after the pass to destroy the defense, all the ability to have a full set. The other category is represented by Latrell Sprewell, who is actually more of a cutter than a shooter. Hornacek has all of the skills mentioned above, but in terms of weight, he is more of a cutter than a shooter. Hornacek may be a good bet to take a shot from the outside on a normal open look, while Sprewell may prefer to cut to the restricted area and take a shot closer to the rim, which is where the difference in offensive options comes into play. To put it bluntly, Sprewell's style of play is already considered a small forward point guard. Looking at today's NBA point guards, like Miller (Reggie Miller), Dumars (Joe Dumars), Richmond (Mitch Richmond), Anderson (Nick Anderson) and so on, it's not hard to find that their differences are not great, almost all are almost the same way of playing. This shows that point guards are pretty distinctive, unlike other positions that often have very different types of play.

To choose the best point guard in NBA history, I think the only position that won't cause controversy is Jordan (Michael Jordan). Jordan's NBA career early, can be said to be very close to the small forward style of play, often can go to the basket to get points, but in the late stage, he has developed a top-notch ability to the outside, so that his point of attack is even more impeccable. Even he can sometimes be a point guard to assist, sometimes can act as a forward to grab the rebound, its all-roundedness is unparalleled. He has a point guard should have the accuracy and range, but also has the ability to play small forward, and its hitting rate can be high, coupled with his agility, and let him have excellent defensive skills, the most important thing is that his aura and leadership temperament, but also any training can not be reached.

Point Guard (PG)

The Point Guard is the person who has the most opportunities to get the ball on the court. He has to bring the ball safely from the backcourt to the frontcourt, and then pass the ball to the other teammates, which gives the others a chance to score. If the small forward is the star of a play, the point guard is the director of that play.

As always, let's talk about what makes a point guard qualified. First of all, his dribbling ability is absolutely essential, he must be able to bring the ball across the half-court without any problem when there is only one person to defend him. Then, he also has to be a good passer, able to get the ball where it's supposed to go most of the time: sometimes a gap where he can shoot, sometimes a better position to guide the ball. Simply put, he's got to get the ball flowing, and he's got to be able to get the ball where it's most likely to score. To take it a step further, he has to organize the team's offense and make it more fluid.

So what else do we expect from a point guard? When it comes to scoring, the point guard is often the last scorer on the team, meaning he doesn't take easy shots unless the rest of his teammates don't have a good chance to make them. Or, to put it another way, he has a strong scoring ability and uses it to create opportunities for his teammates by disrupting the opposing team's defense. All in all, the point guard has one constant principle: when any teammate on the court has a better chance than he does, he will always give the ball to the teammate with the better chance. Therefore, the shots taken by the ball handler are often taken by teammates whose chances are better than his own, and he will give the ball to the teammate who has the better chance. Therefore, the control player's shot is often a very good time to shoot, naturally, our requirements for his hitting rate is also higher, generally speaking, it should be more than 50%, which is higher than that of small forwards and point guards. And in terms of scoring ability, outside and cutting are two of his must-have tools.

An example should make it clearer. John Stockton is very much the prototypical point guard, with a four-pronged ball-handling game that tends to get the ball to opportunistic teammates on the floor for an easy shot at the basket or from the outside. He doesn't have any fancy passing moves, but he gets the ball to his teammates safely, and he's pretty solid from beyond the arc, often hitting over 50% of his shots. Stockton is the standard-bearer when it comes to what a competent point guard should do. Isiah Thomas, on the other hand, is not quite the same type of player, as his dribbling moves have been mastered and his playful passing is impressive. Thomas, however, is more of a point guard with a high desire to score, and as a result, he often scores in the high 20's, but his shooting percentage is less than 50%. In comparison, Thomas already has the characteristics of an all-around player and is considered an all-around point guard. Bob Cousy and Oscar Robertson are the most familiar point guards in history. In addition, among current players, Tim Hardaway and Mark Price are too well known to mention here.

The next step is to introduce the best point guard in my mind, and I believe everyone has pronounced his name in unison: Earvin "Magic" Johnson. In fact, I have considered this for a long time because Stockton should be the best example of a true point guard, but I finally chose Johnson, mainly because of his unique leadership ability and his ability to boost morale on the court. First of all, Johnson's ball control, passing ability should be no doubt, although his cross-step dribbling action is not very beautiful, but the ball in the palm of the control is just right, behind the back of the pass, pointing to kill the west is needless to say. In other aspects, no matter outside or cut to the layup, destruction, also let the opponents have a hard time, but the only shortcoming is that his hitting rate is a little low, just enough to 50%, three-point shooting is even worse. The only drawback is that his shooting percentage is a little low, just under 50%, and his three-point shooting is even worse. However, what really makes him a great ball handler is the same thing mentioned earlier - leadership. The ability of a point guard to direct the team's offense and defense on the court, and even give all his teammates the confidence to win as long as he's on the court, is a mental boost that can't be matched by a few assists. Simply put, Johnson is able to let the teammates on the field to play more than 100 percent of the man, rather than any data can be described, which is why Johnson is the magician.
