Shengjia, Shao and I
Shao and I, Sheng Jia: Looking Back for a Hundred Years
A woman with fine features, wearing a simple and elegant cheongsam with a black round white background, stood in the garden with a reserved attitude, quietly looking at the front and quietly leafing through her life for nearly a hundred years. This is Sheng, an ordinary woman. Because she was born in a famous family and married a controversial poet, everything she experienced and people she met became unusual. "Sheng Jia, Shao He and I" is a story she told in her later years, but she unconsciously filled the whole book and read it again.
A hundred years ago, in Shanghai, the Sheng family was a veritable rich family, living in luxury and exquisiteness, with a tradition of poetry and calligraphy. The author's grandfather Sheng Xuanhuai, together with Li Hongzhang's colleagues, created countless firsts in the modern history of China and made great contributions to the development of the Westernization Movement. The funeral after death shows the grand occasion of Sheng's heyday. It took 100 people to carry the coffin. The original crew who carried the coffin for Empress Dowager Cixi were all invited from the Forbidden City. After three years of mortuary, two years in Shanghai and two years in Suzhou, undertaker went all the way from Shenggongguan to the Bund. Looking at such ostentation and extravagance makes people want to stop, saying that they have never seen such a big funeral.
There are other scenes, such as a family visit to Hangzhou, my father's land and water Dojo, his own wedding, uncle's and brother's wedding, elder's birthday celebration, eating western food, new world recreation, etc., which record almost every detail of the author from birth to ancient life and reproduce the living conditions of various people in the Sheng family. From this perspective, there is some flavor of A Dream of Red Mansions, which provides a vivid case for understanding and studying the life of China's modern extended family. ……
