Japanese people are not very poor ah can not afford to buy a bench only to kneel on the ground
Kneeling on a tatami mat is called "sitting" to the Japanese, and is called "seating" or "shouza. Za" or "Shoza". "Za" was introduced to Japan from China in the Hatori period (about the 7th century), but it was not until the Edo period that the term "shouza" came into use.
Shouza is the practice of placing one's buttocks on the balls of one's feet, which may seem difficult, but for Japanese people it is not a sin, but an enjoyment, as they have been accustomed to it since they were children. Now in the tea ceremony, kendo, as well as funerals, ceremonies and formal conversations and other occasions, the Japanese still have to "seat".
It is said that when a Chinese opera troupe staged the famous Japanese tragedy "Chunqin Copy," the actors practiced "seating" in order to act realistically and portray the task to the right place, and suffered a lot because of it. However, because they did not get rid of the concept of "kneeling", the posture remained unorthodox no matter how much they practiced.
The Japanese also call "kneeling" "tushita-za," which is similar to kowtowing and expresses extreme respect or deep gratitude. To ask someone to forgive a mistake or to do something, they would also kneel down and kowtow, saying, "I've done it all (begged you)!"
