What do you think are the differences between Western and Eastern philosophy?
Western and Eastern philosophies actually have **** in common, otherwise there would not be the current development of hermeneutics. However, it is precisely because of the differences between Western and Eastern philosophies that the two need hermeneutics to find a place of convergence. If we say that the biggest difference between Western philosophy and Eastern philosophy is not the deeper meaning of Western philosophy and Eastern philosophy, but the discourse system of Western philosophy and Eastern philosophy is very different. For example, Plato's Ideal State and The Meeting of the Drinking Glasses have a more logical system and a clearer discourse. Chinese philosophy, on the other hand, seeks to talk outside the box, to get the point across, not directly.
Western philosophy is very clear in its discourse and system, while Eastern philosophy is not. Western philosophy from the trace back to the ancient Greek period, from the pre-classical philosophy, such as Heracles and Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, and then later neo-Platonists Ficino, to Nietzsche, Foucault, and so on, it can be said that the logical system of Western philosophy is very clear, very clear, and basically can be followed in accordance with the clues to follow the map. Moreover, the expressions of these philosophers are also relatively clear in logic. Therefore, this characteristic of Western philosophy can be seen in Russell's History of Western Philosophy.
And although Eastern philosophy actually has an internal logic and deep system, the expression of its discourse is poetic and therefore just not direct. This is especially true when you look at the Lao and Zhuang philosophies, such as the Tao Te Ching, Zhuangzi, etc., which reflect this characteristic. Therefore, Chinese philosophical discourse is complacent. Looking at it this way, it is true that Chinese philosophy cannot be as direct as Western philosophy, and therefore understanding it requires more thought on the part of the reader.
Thus, the difference between Western and Eastern philosophies is probably most obvious in the difference between the logical system and the directness and indirectness of their discourses. This also leads to the necessity of hermeneutics in comparative philosophy to converge the two.
