1, Chengde Summer Resort
Chengde Summer Resort, also known as Chengde Palace or Hot River Palace, is located in Chengde City, Hebei Province. It was the place where the Qing Dynasty emperors spent their summer vacation and dealt with political affairs. It was built during the Kangxi period and covers an area of 5.64 million square meters, making it the largest surviving classical garden in China.
With the help of natural terrain, the Summer Resort is divided into a palace area and a garden area, blending the best of the gardening arts of the north and south. Although man-made, it looks natural.
The palace area is where the emperor dealt with state affairs, held celebrations and daily life. The halls and walls are mostly green bricks and gray tiles, elegant and solemn, simple and modest. The name Yuyuan Garden means "pleasant old relatives" and "Yu" means "peace" and "peaceful".
