What are the traditional festivals of the Calgary Stampede in Canada?
The Calgary Stampede is Calgary's most famous festival, with the reputation of being "the world's most exciting outdoor show", a true western extravaganza and carnival. Starting on the first Friday in July, the festival is a 10-day celebration of the spirit of exploration in the West, and is attended by about a million people each year.
Origins of the Calgary StampedeThe Calgary Stampede originated at the turn of the last century, beginning with a cowboy's dream. In 1912, a cowboy named Guy Weadick, who traveled extensively throughout the United States performing in western rodeos, dreamed of organizing a rodeo to promote the spirit and culture of the pioneer west.
In his efforts, his idea was funded by the four major rodeo organizers at the time, and he raised $100,000 to create a rodeo in Calgary for the first time in September 1912, which was an instant success and was supported by all of Calgary's citizens. Since then, the usually quiet Calgary has been thrown into a frenzy every July. The rodeo has grown bigger and bigger, with more events and prizes, attracting competitors from all over the world.
Calgary Stampede attractions kick off the festivities with the Stampede Parade, in which about 4,000 people take part, with 350,000 spectators watching from around the city. The parade includes 40 floats, 750 horses and 30 marching bands. Spectators flock to the parade site early each morning in anticipation of finding a better viewing spot. Tens of thousands of free, made-from-scratch pancake breakfasts are also served from 9 to 11 a.m. each day at dozens of fixed points, including major shopping malls, and all who know and don't know are invited to join in.
The highlight of Calgary's event is the two-million-dollar Rodeo Entertainment Show, which attracts competitors from around the world. The exciting rodeo entertainment includes wagon races, produce displays, a cowboy pancake breakfast, electric horse rides, nightly performances and much more.
Rodeo finale of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police musical parade, is one of the audience's favorite shows, dressed in bright red uniforms, riding boots of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, riding a color of black steeds, step by step marching, but also with the melody of the music, changing out of a variety of formations, the kind of perfection, elegance and trained horsemanship, so that all the viewers can not help but to marvel at it.
