Traditional courtyard style of Shanxi merchants

The Wangjia Courtyard embodies the style of architectural decoration in Qing Dynasty, and also highlights the toughness of ancient buildings in the north. There is a saying that "the Wangs will not go to the hospital when they return", and it really lives up to its reputation. In this way, it is true that the Wang Family Courtyard can be called the "Folk Forbidden City".

The Wang Family Courtyard was built by the family over 300 years, including five lanes, six castles and one street. It is a museum with Chinese cultural characteristics. The front yard of Wang Jia Courtyard is made of wood structure, and the back yard is made of two-story cave architecture, the bottom floor is a cave with a front eaves and a corridor, and the second floor is a beam-column wood structure, which constitutes a reasonable combination of typical beam-column wood structure and masonry cave architecture, and the structural accessories are beautifully decorated.

The "three sculptures" of the Wang Family Courtyard, namely brick carving, wood carving and stone carving, are an important part of the overall architectural art and one of the most representative features of the Wang Family Courtyard. The so-called "architecture should have a plan, the plan should have a purpose, and the intention should be auspicious" is a true portrayal of Wang Jiayuan's sculpture art. For example, the lifelike "lion rolling hydrangea" on the front wall, and the "Phoenix Peony" and "Songzhu Meilan" carved on the lintel of Songzhu Academy are all ingenious works. In many themes, he or she implicitly expresses his or her desire for good luck, fame and wealth, or his or her desire to live and work in peace and contentment.

The architectural pattern of Wang's courtyard inherited the quadrangle style formed in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The design of quadrangle residence, although the courtyard layout is mostly multi-courtyard, is changeable in style and properly combined. The whole architectural design is a combination of officials, businessmen, people and Confucianism, which not only follows the traditional theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements in ancient China, but also conforms to the pecking order. There are other ethical and moral etiquette systems inside and outside.
