What are the traditional festivals of Dong nationality?
Living Road Festival is a traditional folk festival of Baojing Dong nationality in zhenyuan county. It is held every year on the second day of the tenth day of the first lunar month, which is a grand gathering of local Dong people before they enter the busy spring ploughing.
What is a road? There are nine Dong villages in Baojing area. According to the traditional custom, nine Dong villages should select four adult men with good conduct and prestige to handle important local affairs, two of whom are leaders in charge of agricultural activities.
According to local customs, people stop working and producing every year from the 30th of the twelfth lunar month. On this morning, the stove head solemnly announced that all labor tools would be sealed, and every household would stamp their plows, spinning wheels, hoes and other farm tools until the stove head festival, so that everyone could have a leisure festival.
On the Day of Living Road, people will get together in high spirits in the early morning. The wayhead will put a bundle of green and tender grass on the designated field dam. Men, women and children in all villages will wear festive costumes and play lusheng to Tianba. After three iron cannons, the living road head will drive the cattle to plow the fields and plough the soil. Then he waved a hoe and dug a nest, and planted several tufts of tender thatch in the newly ploughed soil, symbolizing the lush rice seedlings.
Later, people played lusheng, surrounded the young crops, circled around and danced the cheerful lusheng dance. In the afternoon, every household tore off the seal on the farm tools and planted several clumps of tender thatch in their own gardens, symbolizing breaking ground for spring ploughing and wishing a bumper harvest in the coming year. In the evening, women are busy weaving and spinning.
After the Living Road Festival, spring ploughing officially began the next day. As a ceremonial festival before spring ploughing, the Living Road Festival has been circulating among the local Dong people, rain or shine, and has not changed for many years.
