Xingyiquan Beginner's Guide

Introduction to Xingyiquan

Xingyiquan is one of the best styles of martial arts that has been around for a long time and has many practitioners. It has the advantages of being both physical and practical, suitable for both young and old, both internal and external, rigid and flexible. And there is a simple and concise, the fist with the work of the characteristics of the arm; coupled with its simple and simple action, so it is y loved by the people. As long as perseverance, you can achieve the purpose of disease, strong body.

First, the origins of boxing

The founder of the fist and the previous generations of the heir apparent although there is a controversy, but on the spectrum, history and today's testimony, the fist is the end of the Ming and early Qing dynasty Ji inter can be created; Ji inter can be passed on to the Cao Jiwu, passed on to the Dai Longbang, passed on to the Li Luoneng, passed on to the Guo Yunshen, Liu Qilan and other and the Shanxi Sung Shirong, the Chebang Zhai, etc. The argument is recognized by the majority of the people. On the boxing skills of the historical situation, JiJiJi can pass on boxing skills and the present XingYiQuan is very different. From the Shaolin Temple's secret of the "twelve major potentials of the mind put", and Henan Ma Xueli's "ten major forms of the mind of the Prime Minister", the most obvious difference lies in the type of footwork and footwork, and what they have passed on is the use of the side bow and arrow step. In boxing, although all focus on the sharpening of the single potential, skilled in technical combat, conducive to actual combat, but in the action, name, content and techniques, not only the substance is different, but also the face is not the same.

Dai Longbang in Shanxi Qixian area of the Six Harmonies or Six Harmonies of the mind, with the side of the bow and arrow step, has not yet formed a modern Xingyiquan chicken legs and locust worm step. However, the techniques emphasized the unity of inside and outside, and began to focus on the inner consciousness and breathing, as well as the internal and external coordination of strength and movement. Taking the dantian as the basis, leading the qi with the intention, combining the hands and feet, and integrating attack and defense. From these techniques, Mr. Dai Longbang has begun to emphasize the use of internal consciousness, internal strength, and the use of God and Qi from the tradition of movements and stances. This change is a sublimation of the techniques and is undoubtedly a contribution. It created the technical prerequisites for the transformation of Liouhe Quan into Xingyiquan. Li Luoneng learned it from Dai Longbang and introduced it to the north, which was once called Xingyiquan and later renamed as Xingyiquan, which he further developed. He used like an axe, like a flash (like electricity), like an arrow, like a cannon, like a bullet to refine the shape, the formation of chopping, drilling, collapsing, cannon, cross the five elements of the shape and meaning of the Prime, the use of the five elements of the theory of the birth of grams and control of the order of the treatment of disease, strengthen the body, and enhance the power. Dai Longbang's ten major forms and seven minor forms were refined into twelve forms (this is the origin of the renamed Xingyi Keng), which enriched the connotation of boxing. He also made refinement and enrichment of boxing equipment sets, changed the side of the bow and arrow step, and replaced with two legs bending, before the three after seven, with the chicken legs and into the body with the shear strength of the back foot of the acacia worm step, so that Xingyi Quan to break the martial arts to the bow, the horse, servant, the virtual, the break for the main step of the practice, the formation of a unique "line such as acacia?quot; the unique step type and footwork. Become a major innovation after Dai Longbang. It is because Mr. Lee in-depth subtlety, poor its mystery, only in the technique to achieve "fist no fist, meaning no intention, no intention is the true intention" attainments, known as the "God fist".

Li Menyiyuan Xingyiquan, by the Che Yi Zhai, Song Shirong main widely spread in Shanxi, then known as the "Shanxi School". And to Guo Yunshen, Mr. Liu Qilan as the head, and become a Hebei. This fist from Li has seen eight or nine generations of passers-by, can be seen in the simple style of boxing, generally loved by the people.

Xingyiquan from, Xingyiquan, Xingyi Liuhequan, Liuhequan to Yiquan (Yiquan is the name of the predecessor of Xingyiquan called, not Mr. Wang Xiangzhai for the predecessor of Dachengquan named) to Xingyiquan, due to the dissemination of a long period of time, the constant evolution, so not only the name, content and techniques have changed, especially in some of the boxing scriptures, the theory of boxing spectrum, but also a great deal of change. This makes it difficult for us to recognize them. Some of the old kung fu manuals before the changes are not like antiques or secret documents, which are more valuable the older they are. Because the movements and techniques of Xingyiquan itself have changed, the theory naturally has to change as well. Therefore, if we practice Xingyiquan now, if we refer to "Xingyiquan Records", we will not be able to match it. If we refer to the "Xingyi Liuhe Fist Records" which was revised many times since the 11th year of the Yongzheng reign, we will also feel that the Records are not equal to the reality of Xingyiquan's movements and techniques. For example, in the "Ten Essentials of Liouhe" (which was later changed to the so-called "Summary of Ten Methods" by Cao Jiwu), there are a number of statements that are contrary to the technical requirements of Xingyiquan, such as "Three Sections", which is a summary of the "Ten Essentials of Liouhe". For example, when talking about the "Three Sections", it is proposed that "the top section of the cover starts, the middle section follows, then the root section should be pursued, the three sections correspond to each other, so that there will not be the disease of the length of the curvature and straightness, and there will be no discrepancy of the fear of the pitching and tilting, so the three sections of the precious Ming also". The role of the three sections of "starting, following, chasing" means that the main points of the technique are active in the tip section, while the middle and root sections are only following and chasing, so that the tip section is empty, and the middle and root are powerless. Shape of the required "three sections to urge", the initiative in the root section, such as "waist to urge the hips, hips to urge the knee, knee to urge the foot", so that the waist to play a dominant role, the Dantian internal energy to be able to send, in order to play the "punch three sections do not see shape! This is the only way to make the waist play a dominant role and the internal energy in the dantian can be released, so that the power of "the fist strikes three sections without seeing the shape" can be realized. From the point of view of the above two different techniques and strength, its role is exactly the opposite. The article also said: "four tips", only focusing on the appearance of the launch. In fact, the blood, bone, flesh and sinews of a human being cannot function without the mobilization of the internal intention; whereas Xingyi says "startle the four tips". It is only when this "shock" is brought into play that the inner spirit can be revitalized. The meaning of these two techniques is very different. Another example is the article about "rise and fall", although they talk about techniques, elbow method, footwork, but the essence of the performance in the use of strokes, such as the hands "up as lifting the tripod, down as a bottle"; "elbow protection heart ribs, the hand to lift the yin up, and the rise of the tiger as the "Covering the foot up, the knee to the bosom, the knee to hit the knee and out, the shape of the upturn, such as the hand up to lift the yin is also. As for the fall, it is like drilling something with a stone," etc., which is very different from the meaning of Xingyi. Such as Xingyi said "up horizontal not see horizontal, down smooth not see smooth" is Gu in the fight, fight in the Gu, unless the master of the instruction is difficult to understand the trick, which shows the depth of its meaning. Another example is that "to rise is to go, to fall is to strike, to strike up and down like the waves of the water", which is exactly what people only hear rumors about, but it is difficult to see the actual technical know-how. The so-called "rubbing strength", which some people call "paddling strength", is actually "wave strength", which is the same as the "stone drilling" and "stone drilling" mentioned in the article. This is different from the "drilling with stones" and "grasping with eagles" mentioned in the article, what is the difference between their technical connotations? The list goes on and on. This is enough to show that, at present, the skills have been highly developed and several changes in the Xingyiquan, and then go to refer to the old manuals, not only unhelpful, but also harmful, will fall into the fog do not know where to go. Now there are still people citing the so-called "Cao Jiwu's ten methods" for practicing is obviously inappropriate. Only from Hebei, with Dai Longbang in the 15th year of the Qianlong made "the preface of the Sixth Fist" of this hand-copied "Sixth Fist", its content in addition to still retaining the Dai family's "Sixth Fist" part of the contents of the spectrum, but also added a lot of technical theory, although the text of the shallow and profound connotations. Unfortunately, due to the transmitting and copying of this manual, there are a lot of omissions and errors in the text. Some are in the transcription of personal knowledge and needs, on the basis of unauthorized additions, subtractions or modifications, which is also one of the main reasons for the disorder. In addition, there are the so-called "boxing scriptures" or "boxing manuals", or some of the articles and writings about the boxing, or borrowing the name of the ancients, or make a fuss, or the Xingyi Quanfa said that the art of the Immortal Way. Therefore, we should make more comparisons, dialectical understanding, choose the appropriate and use, can not be cloudy, mislead themselves, harmful to future generations.

Second, techniques, styles, characteristics and Shang's special theory

(a) unique techniques

Xingyiquan in the techniques of three times the kung fu, three steps in the practice of different steps. If you want to seek deep knowledge and gain from practicing, you need to pursue it according to these three different steps.

1. The unique piling work - the three-body form and the theory of techniques related to it.

The basic skills of Xingyiquan, according to Mr. Shang Yunxiang, before the formal practice of boxing, you have to stand on a good stake, standing is the three-body style (also known as the three talents style, also known as the eagle catching style). According to Mr. Shang's requirements of the difficulty, precision requirements are higher, from the leg tremor, gas float, become the intention of the gas through the four tips, hands, feet, and then the heart of the heat, followed by hand joints and knee joints creaking, not only other people with their hands can be touched, ringing loudly, you can hear the fingers, knees, the creaking sound. This pile work does have to enhance the physical strength, escort tendons and bones, enrich the dantian, gas through the role of the four tips.

Some people say that Mr. Shang teach people, you have to stand three years of stakes, although overstated, but stand stakes is to build a foundation, stereotypes, looking for strength to increase power. Therefore, it is not enough to stand on the piles for three years, and you should stand on the piles constantly. If you don't stand on piles for a long time, not only are your legs weak and your body strength scattered, but also your posture will be deformed, because of the cloud, in order to have a long work force, firm downward disk, Shu Jin Liqi has to stand on piles often.

If you are not dedicated to this need to cure the disease and health, only for the practice of Xingyi Quan, in order to achieve the body with the use of cultivation, on the Mr. Shang's transmission is no need to practice other stakes. Mr. Shang used to say, "How to speak (according to the essence of boxing scriptures), how to practice, how to practice, how to use". It is only when the practice is long and the work is pure that it can be used effectively. The practice and use of Xingyiquan basically uses the leg strength and footwork used in the three-body style (there are also a few other footwork patterns adapted to special needs in the routine). Walking up is generally "line like acacia worm" of "acacia worm step". Regardless of how the front foot how to stirrups, stereotypical movements or inseparable from the three-body style which is practiced for the use of practice, practice makes perfect, power pure from the fine, so that the three-body style is the Xingyiquan all the way to a pile work. Therefore, people regard it as the "door to the Tao" and call it the "mother style".

People practicing piling work initially feel bitter and difficult to endure for a long time, and then will have a great taste, and even piling solid roots, internal and external enrichment; physique enhancement, six strength whole. Therefore, seniors often say: "Pile work is a treasure, get it to be good." If you do not do, what "immovable as a mountain", "hit to far, gas to destroy, fist like a cannon, dragon folding body" and other skills, it can only be empty talk. Because the root is not solid want to send powerless, and how to put people to control the enemy.

Xingyi Quan techniques, from the beginning of the stakes to the formal action, whether it is practicing the appearance, or the study of the inner meaning, from static to dynamic, from simple to complex, from practice to use, have its connotation of the profound theory of the technique, is a beginner must master, it should be familiar with the practice of the understanding of the pass, the formation of the natural, so that one of the movement that is, do not think about self-acquisition is good. The theory of these techniques is based on ancient philosophy, Taoism, health Chinese medicine, the internal scripture of yin and yang and the five elements, combined with the formation of martial arts techniques, so its techniques are summarized in philosophical terms.

Before practicing the three-body posture, the first natural upright preparatory posture is designed to regulate the breath, quiet the mind, calm the spirit, and eliminate distractions. It is because it is "no thought, no intention, no form, no image", so the former is called "Wuji style". Standing still is to prepare for practicing the movement, from "nothing to something", although the appearance has not moved, but "the spirit does have something to concentrate on", so there is a "Wuji turned into a pole" said. Then bend the arms and legs, but the left and right yin and yang are not separated, the two arms are raised against the body, and the hands are pressed down in front of the abdomen, the upper and lower bundles into one, in order to prepare for the action, that is, the so-called: "Tai Chi is the root of all things in heaven and earth." Therefore, our predecessors called it "Taiji Style". From the above three steps before the three body styles, from "no thought and no intention" to "God has concentration" to "action that is issued" these three steps are exactly from static to dynamic, it is a good training for the inner spiritual consciousness. It is a good training for the inner spiritual consciousness. The scripture says: "Quiet is the essence, and movement is the function. If it is said that the quiet, not showing the real machine; if it is said that its movement, not seen its traces"; "immovable as mountains, difficult to know such as yin and yang", these statements in the technical combat can play a role in making the other side difficult to know the movement of the static and static, real and virtual, and play a role in shocking the military heart. Scripture said "nothing gas line, gas line absolute image, absolute image absolute Ming, Jue Ming is the spirit of the gas is connected, all things return to the root of the synthesis of a gas". Mr. Shang said: "Xingyiquan is mainly practicing God and Qi." Dan Shu Yun: "Quietness is the nature, movement is the intention, and wonderful use is God." When practicing, only when the mind is calm and tranquil can the spirit be popular, and only when the mind is free from distracting thoughts and objects can the spirit be focused. Only then will the spirit be inspired. Only in this way in the exercise can help into the subtle, God through; in the use of inspiration. Because of this in the learning and practicing of this silent process must not be ignored.

When you start to do the action, two hands clenched fist from the navel to the left and right to pull open, this action includes two forearms to the body to the left and right twisting and bracing of the bundle of the body's power. Left and right yin and yang are divided, so called "two ceremonies" (i.e. yin and yang). It is a synonym for maneuver, used to illustrate the relativity and unity of all things," says the Compendium of the Inner Classic. Used in Xingyi techniques, it refers to the relative parts of the human body and reflects the opposite and complementary relationship in the movements. Such as up and down, front and back, left and right, backward and forward, up and down, static and dynamic, virtual and real, rigid and flexible, bundling and spreading, stretching and retracting, put in and out and so on action and role, the two are both opposite, and into each other, but also proportional and support each other, so in the technique of the general to the "yin and yang" on behalf of the argument.

The so-called "three bodies", also known as "three talents", originally referred to the sky, the earth and man. In the Xingyiquan scripture that the human body is also a small world, so there are also three bodies, which is the origin of the name of Xingyiquan "three-body style". It is also called "San Cai Style" or "Eagle Catch Style". The so-called "three bodies" that refers to the upper, middle and lower three plates, that is, the head, upper limbs, lower limbs, but also includes the upper and lower, inside and outside, through the body. The experience of our predecessors tells us that through the exercise of Fu Wei Gong to. If we can do Yin and Yang together, inside and outside a gas, three body pure one, in practicing to find the power on the "nothing can not be", so that "three weight born everything Zhang".

The "Four Elephants" mentioned in the Boxing Classic are purely technical, and have nothing to do with the so-called sun, taiyin, shaoyang, and shaoyin. It refers to "chicken leg, dragon body, bear bladder, tiger holding the head", which is called the "Four Elephants". The four elephants are the "chicken legs", the "dragon body", the "bear's bladder" and the "tiger's head", all of which are used for the purpose of obtaining the strength of the chicken legs, the dragon body with the three folds, the bear's bladder with the sunken shoulders and vertical neck, and the tiger's head. These four pictorial techniques are the generalized guidelines of Xingyiquan. If you can fulfill the requirements at all times in your exercise, you will gain from practicing and be able to use them effectively. The "five elements" mentioned in the boxing scripture are the five substances of "gold, wood, water, fire and earth". Chinese medicine uses it to illustrate the relationship between the five organs and the relevant mechanisms of the human body in the physiological function of mutual biochemistry and constraints. Xingyiquan is based on the Chinese medicine internal meridian yin and yang five elements of disease, fitness, changes in organism, cultivate physical strength and technology, because of the practice of the five elements of boxing both for the body to gain, so we must follow the theory of phytogeny to practice; in the event of pathological changes, but also to use the multiplication and the counter-insult (i.e. Shunke and Reverse Grams) to constrain the use of the principle of birth and grams of control. But in the use of five elements of boxing techniques, but can not be applied to the use of the principle of birth and grams, because the use of techniques is ever-changing, it must be "adaptable", "with no fixed method", so there is no must use what boxing to restrain what boxing, or else it would be a mistake of dogmatism. The first step is to make sure that you have a good understanding of what you're doing.

The requirements of Xingyiquan on the technique of "Liuhe" are very important, and it can be said that "Liuhe" is the basis of the technique of Xingyiquan, so the predecessor of Xingyiquan was called "Xingyi Liuhequan" and "Liuhequan". Therefore, the predecessor of Xingyiquan was called "Xingyi Liuhequan" and "Liuhequan", indicating that "Liuhe" is the core of Xingyiquan's techniques. Practitioners of Xingyiquan sharpen the "up and down follow each other, inside and outside unity, the body integrity of a qi", in order to advance to a higher level of technical attainments of the foundation, and the "Six Harmonies" is the most direct technical prerequisites for the establishment of the premise, that is, "Six Harmonies". "Six Harmonies" is the most direct way to establish the technical prerequisites for it. Of course, this "Six Harmonies" does not refer to the philosophical "Six Harmonies in the four directions of heaven and earth", but to the three harmonies of the human body, the inner and the outer. The outer three are the hand and foot, elbow and knee, shoulder and hip. It is required that the upper and lower limbs of the root joints, the middle joints and the tip of the joints to achieve the upper and lower together. Only when the three catalytic forces are whole and the movements are as one, is it considered to have achieved the outer three harmonies. The so-called internal triad is: heart and intention, intention and gas, gas and force. Only when the heart moves and the mind is inspired, and the qi and the force are in unison, can the technique of the internal triad be considered to have achieved the requirements of the internal triad. However, it must also be combined with the upper and lower parts of the external triad, the three catalytic forces, and the movements as one, before the internal and external triad can be considered to have achieved the "integrity of the body and the qi". The so-called "three catalytic force" is the upper limb shoulder catalyzes the elbow, elbow catalyzes the hand; the lower limb waist catalyzes the hips, hips catalyzes the knee, knee catalyzes the foot. Only when the three urges of the upper and lower limbs are complete and move as one, is the "three urges of the whole" achieved.

The "seven fists" of boxing are "head, shoulders, elbows, hands, hips, knees and feet". These are the seven prominent points of the human body that are used for striking, which are compared to the "seven stars" and are therefore also called the "seven stars". Instead, it is the seven points of power that emit power by utilizing the whole power of the Six Harmonies.

Mr. Shang, when he talked about the whole of the Six Harmonies and the Seven Fists, mentioned that the human body should practice "eight-sided strength", and that only by grasping the essentials of this technique can we gradually pursue the high level of the technique of "which dips which is there". In essence, it is the mastery of the "above and below the fifteen places to play, are not out of the dantian gas" this technique know-how.

Xingyiquan according to geographical points mainly Hebei and Shanxi two schools (also some people will Henan Xingyiquan included in the **** three schools) in recent times, Hebei, Shanxi, frequent exchanges and the same Li Luoneng heirloom so the two schools of boxing content style techniques and features and practice closer to the Hebei school of Guo Yunshen, Liu Qilan, Li Cunyi, Sun Lutang, etc., as a representative of the fist stretching, stable and solid, the Shanxi school to Che Yonghong, Song Shirong, The Shanxi school is represented by Che Yonghong, Song Shirong, Bu Xuekuan, Song Huchen, Song Tielu, etc. The fist posture is compact and the strength is exquisite, but the Shanxi school can be divided into two branches: Che and Song. The car school of boxing simple and simple action fast, the Song school of hair force trembling, internal work is subtle.

Footwork training

Regarding footwork, there is a saying in the martial arts world, "Teach boxing not to teach footwork, teach footwork to beat the master." This is a reminder of the importance of footwork!

The footwork training of traditional Chinese martial arts is not as simple as the footwork training of modern combat (e.g., sparring, boxing, and muay thai and other extraterritorial martial arts). Modern martial arts footwork requirements are light, agile, floating, is concerned with the ability to quickly avoid each other's blows can be. The traditional martial arts require not only the ability to quickly and easily dodge the opponent's blows, but also part of their overall strength!

So what is the real boxing footwork? It can be said that the footwork under the limitations of rhythmic timing is the real boxing footwork!

In the beginning of the practice of footwork do not pay too much attention to the "swinging hips", but the "backward drive against the line", "sudden stop" is a must from the beginning of the training to pay attention to! The When you first start practicing footwork, you should pay close attention to the training of "rhythm"! When the time value of "rhythm" reaches its limit, "sudden stop", "backward movement", "hip-swinging" and "sudden stop" will all come at once. "will all come unexpectedly and naturally. In a word, the practice of footwork at the beginning, we must pay attention to "fast".

What is the time value of the rhythm of the footwork? It's the absolute quickness of the overall shape of the body that remains unchanged!

What are the benefits of a footwork rhythm that has reached its own time value, and how does it differ from normal footwork?

Our footwork (which is not strictly unique to us, as it is in many traditional Chinese martial arts) is absolutely different from the walking and sliding footwork of modern combat arts such as sparring and boxing! When the time value of the practitioner's footwork slightly reaches the time value of the rhythm, his state will immediately be different. When attacking, he will pounce on the opponent with the same momentum and speed as the angry waves beating the shore and the autumn wind sweeping away the leaves. Opponents can not blink his eyes in front of him; retreat, he will be like a snake, rabbit-like swiftness, keen, in the strike came to the moment can draw away! So it is not too much to say that the footwork is described as "mad cow and angry tiger"! Those who have personally tested it are all of the same words: "Fast! It's scary!"

This state of footwork is trained with "rhythm". So, the rhythm of the footwork is how to train? Please listen to me in detail:

To "rhythm" training success, we must pay attention to the following four points: always pay attention to maintain the legs of the pile frame; skillful mastery of the "high-frequency tremor" use; master the ability to change the foot very quickly; pay attention to the coordination of the body method.

(a) Keeping the leg stance at all times means that both legs, especially the back leg, should be kept in a certain bent state! The front leg extends forward a little bit or backward a little bit is nothing to do, but the back leg must maintain the state when standing pile! Why? This is because whether it is a punch or a kick or a step, the power is transmitted from the feet (especially the back leg). If the back leg is straight, just sliding is not so bad, but it is much harder to get out of the characteristic crashing and bouncing power of the footwork. Instead of letting the back leg go from a straight state to a bent state and then to an unstable state to shoot the body out, it is better to let the back leg stay properly bent from the beginning, which will greatly shorten the start-up time when launching the attack! Have you ever seen the state of a cat's body when it is about to launch an attack? It's all bowed and scrunched up, like a spring compressing. When the body springs out, it is like a spring collapsing and popping up. So our fighting style should be like a cat, to have a ready to collapse out of the state!

(2) mastery of "high frequency tremor". "High-frequency tremor" is my description of the body and legs at the moment of the start of the footwork. The rhythm of the footwork is very important! The rhythm should be completed within one beat of "yes", without any sense of delay. The general requirement is that at the moment of power walking, the front leg (foot) has a slight stepping action at the start. The back foot should be lifted and stepped down and then quickly sprung up by the force obtained from the action and reaction forces, and then change the foot movement. This "stepping motion" is never to lift the foot and step hard on the ground, but by virtue of the moment of displacement of the front foot, by virtue of the force of rebound (reaction force), so that the other leg quickly responds to make the corresponding movement. During this time, the body should be shaken, the hip joints should be shaken; the hands should be cooperated with it, and the steps should be driven backward and retrograde. In short, when the step moves, the whole body has no immobility, and no follow each other. It can be said that "high-frequency tremor" is the key to practicing the "mad cow and angry tiger" style of footwork! People who do not have or do not know the training method of "High Frequency Tremor" can hardly grasp the essence of footwork. A "master" openly declared in his book that "this kind of footwork training has been basically lost", what a joke! What a joke! Do you think that your martial art is the only one that has this kind of training method, "the only one, no other"? I can tell you responsibly: this training method has not been lost! In addition to us, there are many other sects that have this training method.

(3) Master the ability to change feet very quickly. Quickly changing feet may seem like a small action, but it is the key to the frequency of footwork changes. Only the front and rear feet of the rapid "pedal", waist and hips out of shape like floating up to rotate, the body instantly directed weightlessness, in order to ensure that the frequency of footwork greatly accelerated.

(D), pay attention to the body's cooperation: the body's cooperation refers to the body to move up in the footwork movement. Do not be dull. The body should always do with the footwork movement in the opposite direction of the non-directional momentary loss of control. For example, when the front foot moves horizontally and the back foot moves forward, the body should be tilted and "crooked" in the same direction at the moment when the front foot moves horizontally. Only when the body and footwork are coordinated, the legs can be freed from the burden of weight, free and fast movement!
