There are eight trends in contemporary Chinese literature.

1. Enlightenment literary trend:

From the Enlightenment trend in the late Qing Dynasty to the May 4th Enlightenment trend.

Characteristics: the awakening of man, the problem of national character, critical tendency (feudal despotism, the pursuit of individuality and liberation, freedom and happiness, concern for the lower classes).

2. Vernacular Literary Thought:

Criticism of the literary language--criticism of Chinese characters, culturological criticism of the literary language.

Features: modernization, nationalization.

3. Realist Literary Thought

Themes: humanity, society, revolution. Theories are: people-oriented, new realism, socialism. Divided into: modern Chinese realism and traditional Chinese realism.

4. Romantic Literary Thought

Poetic system: emphasizing the subjective view of the essence of art, the original view of artistic generation, and the self-discipline view of the function of art; thematic form: human nature restoration, individuality theme; traditional origins: philosophy of life, aesthetic interest, artistic way of thinking.

5. Left-wing literary thought

Based on the revolutionary situation, it is a revolutionary utopian way of imagining, with theoretical contributions such as: neo-realism, materialist conception of literature and art and methodological theory, and the introduction and interpretation of typical theory.

6. Modernist Literary Thought

May 4th Literature and Neo-Romantic Aestheticism (Tian Han, Wen Yiduo); Early Symbolic Poetry, Modernist Poetry, Nine Leaves Poetry School.

7. Liberal Literary Trends

Humanism, Democratic Literature, Humanistic Class, National Survival.

8. Literary Tides of Nationalization and Popularization

The plebeian tendency of the May Fourth, and the popular nationalization tendency of the proletarian literature of the Left League.
