Peking Opera is regarded as China's "National Opera" because of its outstanding artistic level and characteristics. The China Peking Opera Festival is a national art event where Chinese Peking Opera masterpieces and famous actors gather. It is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television, and the China Peking Opera Art Foundation, and hosted by the local government***.
The purpose of the festival is to display outstanding Peking Opera works, gather top talents, exchange artistic experience, attract the participation of the masses, and promote the prosperity of Peking Opera. In addition to the selection of new and old plays entered in the festival, the festival also organizes Peking Opera seminars and live performances, contributing to the dissemination and development of the art of Peking Opera.
The first China Peking Opera Art Festival was held in 1995, and since then it has been held every three years, and has been successfully organized for five times. The sixth edition will be held soon.
