Differential diagnosis:

According to the form and clinical characteristics, the diagnosis is not difficult. This disease should be differentiated from central facial paralysis, facial paralysis caused by acute infectious polyradiculitis, inflammation of posterior cranial fossa and facial paralysis caused by tumor.

Experience:

This disease is mostly caused by deficiency of vital qi, empty collaterals, unstable exterior defense, wind and evil invading collaterals, qi and blood obstruction, and dystrophy of face, foot and Yangming, which leads to muscle retardation. The exact cause of the disease is not clear in modern medicine, and it is generally believed that it may be caused by local inflammation, such as rheumatic facial neuritis, mastoid foramen periostitis, mumps and so on. At the initial stage (1 week), inflammation is still in the development stage. In acupuncture, it is advisable to select fewer points and treat them lightly, or wait 1 week before starting treatment. If the illness persists for a long time and is not treated properly, the illness turns from excess to deficiency, and qi and blood cannot be poured into Yangming, resulting in facial muscles withering and atrophy due to lack of qi and blood, facial numbness, even facial muscles twitching, or mouth and eyes askew, which is difficult to recover. Acupuncture is a feasible and effective method to treat this disease, which can be widely implemented to benefit patients.
