What is small bowel gas?

Small bowel gas generally refers to a hernia.

Hernia, in which an organ or tissue in the body leaves its normal anatomical position and enters another part of the body through a weakness, defect, or foramen formed either congenitally or later in life.

Common hernias include umbilical hernia, straight inguinal hernia, hiatal hernia, incisional hernia, surgical recurrent hernia, white line hernia and femoral hernia. Abdominal wall hernia is mostly caused by coughing, sneezing, overexertion, abdominal obesity, forceful defecation, pregnancy, excessive crying in children, degenerative changes in the strength of the abdominal wall in old age and other reasons that cause an increase in intra-abdominal pressure, forcing the abdominal cavity of the free organs, such as: the small intestine, cecum, the greater omentum, the bladder, the ovary, the fallopian tube, and other organs to enter into another part of the human body through the body's normal or abnormal weak points or defects, orifices.

Clinical manifestations

The more common clinical condition is inguinal hernia, in which a mass can be seen or felt in the inguinal region, which can be recovered after lying down. In infants, it is most often discovered by the mother during a diaper change, and in older children, it is most often discovered while taking a bath. Triggers for the appearance of the lump are increased abdominal pressure, such as crying, coughing, defecation, and urination. Older children can be made to stand, and abdominal pressure can also trigger the appearance of the mass in the groin area, and in some cases it reaches the scrotum or labia.

The lump is formed when an organ in the abdominal cavity prolapses into the hernia pouch. The prolapsed organ is mostly the small intestine, which makes it feel soft to the touch. Other organs, such as the large intestine, appendix and greater omentum, may also prolapse. In females, the ovaries are more likely to herniate, so a thumb-sized, hard lump with pressure is often palpable. Some children may have constipation, loss of appetite, crying and restlessness.
