Explanation of Chiu Chow Opera
The opera genre. It was formed in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, and was then called Chiu Chow. It has preserved many ancient musical compositions from the Tang and Song dynasties and the singing style of the Yiyang opera in the Ming Dynasty. Traditional plays include Chen San Wu Niang. It is popular in Chaozhou, Shantou, Guangdong and southern Fujian. It is also performed in Southeast Asia in areas inhabited by overseas Chinese.
