Talk about the traditional cultural point of view on the understanding of born in trouble, died in peace and happiness

Recommended an article for you to read. But this is not enough to understand life. Suffering is the cause of success, not the cause of success. The cause of success is the Noble Eightfold Path. If you do not realize the Eightfold Path, you will not succeed even if you suffer many setbacks. "Those who pass away do not give up day and night." Ancient philosophers used the metaphor of a river to describe the flow of history, which is indeed very apt and vivid. The hydrological state of the historical "river" is just like the natural river. Some sections of the river are wide and slow, some sections of the river are narrow and fast, or "the tide is flat on both sides of the broad", or "turbulent waves surge". In the long process of history, at different stages, the pace of life is different, the total amount of historical achievements is different, and the brightness of the light of civilization is different. It can be said that at different stages of history, the content of the human wisdom treasury is also different. Why is there such a difference in the manifestation of wisdom in history? The "history of wisdom" may be a theme that researchers of cultural history, intellectual history, history of science and history of invention and creation should pay attention to. In retrospect, there may be complex factors in the generation, utilization, and accumulation of wisdom. Considering such issues, the opinion of Su Shi, a cultural giant of the Song Dynasty, may give us important insights. He wrote in Volume 6 of Dongpo Yi Zhuan: "All men's wisdom is born of sorrow, but foolishness is born of peace and anonymity." He said that wisdom is born of sorrow, and ignorance is born of anonymity. Another Song scholar, Li Zhaoyuan, also said, however, that his counterpart was "Woe is seen in the form of the already". Zhang Jiucheng of the Southern Song Dynasty said, "I have also heard that the wisdom of the world is born in sorrow and dies in peace and happiness." Zhang Jiucheng's words, presumably originated in the "Mengzi - sue the next" language: "into the no law family whisker, out of the no enemy foreign patients, the country will always die. Then we know that we are born in sorrow and die in peace and happiness." Su Shi and others pointed out that "wisdom is born in sorrow", has turned to the meaning of Mencius, noted that the conditions for the generation of "wisdom" lies in "sorrow", is also considered to be a major discovery of the historical manifestation of wisdom. First, let's look at the first meaning of "wisdom is born from sorrow". In terms of social individuals, "worries and troubles" can sharpen the will, refine the spirit, cultivate the nature of the heart, and stimulate the wisdom of the individual heart. After making the argument that "the wisdom of the world is born in sorrow and dies in peace and happiness," Zhang Jucheng added, "Therefore, virtue, wisdom, and skill are derived from (disease and illness)." Then expounded the "Mengzi - sue the next" "the sky will be a great responsibility for the people, must first suffer their hearts and minds, labor their muscles and bones, starve their bodies and skin, empty their bodies, the line of disruption of their own, so move the heart and patience, have benefited from its can not" meaning. Then wrote: "Insincere and arrogant very, is a great Shun. Dangerous and difficult, is out of Jinwen. Is not the sky's achievement of talent, every hardship for the creation of it!" Sima Qian also has long been on the sorrow and hardship can be "achievement" of wisdom of the exposition: "the former Xibo detained Piu Li, the performance of the "Zhou Yi"; Confucius Er Chen Cai, made the "Spring and Autumn Annals"; Qu Yuan exile, with the "Li Sao"; Zuo Qiu blindness, Turk has the "Guoyu"; Sun Zi Bin feet, and the theory of the "Art of War"; not Wei moved Shu, the world passed on the "Lv Duan"; Han Fei imprisonment, the "Lv Duan"; the "Lv Duan"; Han Fei prisoner, the "Lv Duan"; the "Lv Duan". Lv Duan"; Han Fei imprisoned Qin, "said difficult", "loneliness"; "Poetry" 300, most of the sages and saints angry for the work." The second layer of meaning of the so-called "wisdom born of sorrow" is perhaps more important to people who care about history, that is, from the overall level of society, "sorrow" can stimulate the occurrence and flourishing of social wisdom. Observation of the process of socio-cultural development reveals that social and historical upheavals and intense forging often lead to the revitalization of the wisdom of society at all levels. In such a historical period, "the state of affairs has changed in many ways, and there are many talented people, which is a joy to read" (MZD: "Commentary on the Principles of Ethics"). The so-called "talents emerge in abundance" means that the brightness and density of social wisdom are very impressive. Zhuangzi - Repairing the Nature" published the concept of "the ancient rulers of the road, to quiet and raise knowledge", and put forward the so-called "knowledge to raise quiet", advocating that "knowledge and quiet intermingled to raise". "Knowledge" is "wisdom". Yang Wanli, a writer of the Song Dynasty, also said, "Wisdom is born in benevolence." These opinions seem to be different from "wisdom is born from worry", but they are all reflections on the genesis of wisdom from different perspectives. The saying of "Nurturing knowledge with tranquility" and "Wisdom is born in benevolence" point out that wisdom should have a moral foundation and a cultural atmosphere. However, these understandings are, after all, on a different level than the historical discovery that "wisdom is born out of sorrow". --- Lecture by Prof. Wang Zijin
