What does Confucius think is a gentleman?
Confucius turned this title, which is only the meaning of identity and status, into an ideal of Confucian moral personality, and he put forward the concept of "gentleman Confucianism". He said to his master Xia Zi, "A woman (you) is a gentleman's scholar, and she does nothing but a villain's scholar." Confucianism is the name of ancient scholars. Zhu said, "Confucianism is the name of scholars." Therefore, in Confucius' view, Confucianism (scholar) is a person's external identity, while a gentleman is a person's internal cultivation. According to the habit of Confucianism, it should be said that it is a matter of internal cultivation.
To achieve a gentleman's personality, from the inside, we should be "knowledgeable in literature" and borrow the wisdom of the ancients to enrich ourselves and purify our hearts; From the outside, we should "reciprocate" and be a person who knows the rules and keeps order. This is not because we are afraid of law and public opinion, but because we must obey the kindness we hold in our hearts.
