The Physical Education Department of Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) originated from the Physical Education Group of the National Northwestern Polytechnical Institute in 1938, and the Physical Education Teaching and Research Office of NPU was created in 1957 and renamed the Physical Education Department in 1990, which is an independent teaching and academic support unit of the university.
The Department of Physical Education adheres to the school motto of "Public Sincerity, Courage and Perseverance" and the school spirit of "Three Realities and One New", and adheres to the philosophy of "Students as the Root, Nurturing as the Foundation, Scholars as the Essentials, Academics as the Soul, and Responsibility as the Weight". "It is mainly responsible for the teaching of compulsory and elective physical education courses for all undergraduates, as well as mass sports activities, sports competitions, physical fitness testing, training and management of high-level sports teams, sports scientific research and discipline construction, and stadium management and services.
Strong faculty
The Department of Physical Education currently has 80 faculty members***, of which 52 are career staff members and 28 are non-career staff members employed by the university; there are 58 full-time faculty members, of which 3 are professors, 31 are associate professors, 16 are instructors, 8 are assistant professors, 4 are assistant professors, and there are 5 master's degree instructors. Wang Libin is the former main center of national men's basketball team, the flag bearer of Chinese team in 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and now serves as the head coach of men's basketball team of the school. There are 2 international-level referees and 16 national-level referees in the Department of Physical Education, among whom Wang Cheng and Dong Lin participated in the refereeing work of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Enrichment of physical education courses
The university offers 97 courses for teaching physical education programs, including traditional Chinese sports such as wushu and dragon dance, and was the first to offer a rugby course among colleges and universities in Northwest China in 2012, and badminton courses have been rated as a high-quality course in Shaanxi Province.Since 2019, it has pushed ahead with the reform of physical education teaching for undergraduates. A teaching, practicing and competition system (teaching, practicing hard and competing often) has been established to cover the whole process of undergraduate physical education inside and outside the classroom.
