Name: Patti Smith

Gender: Female

Original name:

English name: Patti Smith

Birthday: December 30, 1946

Zodiac sign: Capricorn

Zodiac sign: Capricorn

Nationality:

Region: Europe and the United States

Biography:With the title of Poet Laureate of Punk Rock, Patti Smith is the most influential female singer in the history of rock music. Her ambitious, unconventional and challenging music has been hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since the heyday of Bob Dylan.

Whenever inspired, Smith's tunes can be very wide-ranging, from structural rock to open-ended experimentalism to over-the-top music.

Patti's most impressive traits are improvisation and a sense of blending free jazz with each other, although the music still has the cacophony of early rock and roll as well as the chords. She is an accomplished musician who, despite her unprofessional voice, is able to convey the mood of her lyrics well, and on stage she is like a sorcerer with mesmerizing power. A regular at the CBGB club, Patti Smith was the first of the group of musicians from the early days of the New York punk era to make a record, even before the Ramones. Patti's music had both the artistry and amateurism that influenced the punk movement, both in England and New York, and both for her contemporaries and those who came after her. More importantly, Smith became an icon for the next generation of women in rock, never trading her gender for success. She was a deservedly wise and creative fighter. She gave the impression of being both dissipated and tough, somewhat gender-neutral. At the same time, she never used her gender as a gimmick for hype, but was always an artist in the public eye. Her clothes and stage presence displayed an aggressive, male rock image that seemed to remain constant. In the process, she erases everything one might expect from a female rock musician, expanding on all the means artists (male and female) can use to express themselves.

Patti Smith was born in Chicago. When she was 3 years old, the Smith family moved to Philadelphia and then, at age 9, to Woodbury, a not-so-large town in New Jersey. Smith was exposed in high school to Arthur Rimbaud's poetry describing salvation, the work of the Beats, and the music of musicians and bands such as James Brown, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, and Bob Dylan. She enrolled at Glassboro State Teachers College but terminated her education due to an unplanned pregnancy. She gave birth to the child for adoption and went to work for herself on a factory assembly line. After saving enough money, she came to New York in '67. In New York, Smith worked in a bookstore and met art student Robert Mapplethorpe. Although the man had been gay most of his life, Smith fell in love with him.In '69, Smith and her sister traveled to Paris, where they earned money performing on the streets. Upon returning to New York, Smith spent some time with her lover at the Chelsea Hotel. Then she became involved in underground concerts. The playwright Sam Shepard has to be mentioned here. Smith and he wrote and performed the autobiographical play Cowboy Mouth together*** in '71. During this time, Smith also wrote poetry and met Lenny Kaye, a guitarist and rock critic who worked as a clerk in a record store, who had written an article on doo wop for a magazine that made a strong impression on Patti. The duo discovered that they shared a ****ing fondness for early rock 'n' roll, and when Patti gave a choir meeting at St. Marks Church in '71, she had invited Kaye to accompany her live on electric guitar. Over the next two years, Patti continued her theater performances and poetry sessions; she also wrote articles for rock 'n' roll magazines and published two volumes of poetry. In late '73, she joined Kaye onstage again, and the partnership between the two became even stronger. In '74, the two welcomed a new member to the group, guitarist and keyboardist Charlid Sohl ( Richard Sohl), and their music was clearly influenced by the Beat, oozing with an improvisational style and a rock 'n' roll flavor. They began playing regularly in New York and their fame grew. By June '74, with funding from photographer Mapplethorpe, the band released a singles disc, "Hey Joe" b/w "Piss Factory," the former of which featured a monologue about Patty Hearst, and the latter of which brought out Smith's assembly-line worker-like style. Both songs were scored by guitarist Tom Verlaine, who later became Smith's lover. The single disc set the band on the road to independence, with an authentic DIY style that still influences punk rock today.

Late in '74, Smith and her band embarked on a stretch of touring on the West Coast. When the band returned to New York, it was augmented by guitarist/bassist Ivan Kral. The band's '75 shows were enhanced by the addition of drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, who would later officially join the band. The band at this point caught the attention of Arista Records veteran Clive Davis, which led to a recording contract for Smith. Patti produced with former Velvet bandmate John Cale and released a successful debut album, Horses, in '75, which undoubtedly became the seminal work in punk music. Horses was enthusiastically touted by critics, and the songs "Gloria" and "Land of 1000 Dances" on the album not only presented an alternative rock style, but also had the flavor of the original music. Although the album was never played on the radio, it shot to the top 50 in sales.

Then in '76, a radio station played the Patti Smith Band's album and ranked it as one of the most pioneering, alongside the most experimental and open-ended music of the day.

In early '77, Smith had the misfortune of falling off the stage during a show in Tampa, breaking two segments of his spine near his neck, and as a result, had to pull out of the show to get treatment. While recuperating, Smith co-wrote "Because the Night" with Bruce Springsteen***, which reached #13 on the charts and sent the album Easter into the Top 20. Not only that, but over 10,000 avid fans bought the record, even making 'Because the Night' a standard on the Lilith Fair concert tour. The album Easter also features Smith's most famous composition, Rock n Roll Nigger. The piece shills for those who live outside the mainstream. Some pounced on her hubris, yet the song was included in the '94 Natural Born Killers collection. In 1979, thanks to new producer Todd Rundgren, Wave discovered Smith's ever-better voice. This period, however, is considered Smith's least developed time. By this time Smith had been living with Blue Oyster Cult keyboardist Allen Lanier for some time, only to get involved with Fred, guitarist for MC5/Sonic's Rendezvous. In fact, Wave produced two albums, Dancing Barefoot and Frederick, which both featured contributions from this man. He and Smith were married in '80, after which Smith retired from singing and had two children. In '88, Patti made a comeback to singing with an album, Dream of Life. On that album Fred did all the songwriting and played the guitar parts. Also members of The Smiths, Saul and Daugherty, were involved in the production. However, Smith's comeback was only short-lived. When the album was released, she disappeared once again. She never gave up writing, though, and she completed a work of poetry, "Woolgathering," which she gave a live reading at a poetry conference.

Sadly, in the ensuing years, Smith lost some of her closest friends, such as close friend and fellow album cover designer Robert Mapplethorpe, who passed away in '89, and pianist Richard Saul, who died a year later. late in '94, Smith's husband and her brother, Todd, died of heart failure within a month of each other. To assuage her heartache, Smith began performing on stage again. She reorganized the Patti Smith Band, bringing in Kaye, Doherty, and a new bassist, Tony Shanahan. They began organizing small gigs with the aim of bringing back memories of previous performances and familiarizing themselves with the stage again. In '96, the band went into the studio and recorded the album Gone Again. Second guitarist Oliver Ray, friendly guest stars Tom Verlaine, John Cale and Jeff Buckley all added to the album. The tone of 'Gone Again' is stronger and brighter than expected, which many critics have praised. Hot on the heels of Gone Again was the '97 release Peace and Noise, which earned a Grammy nomination for its single "1959". Smith killed it again in 2000 with the album Gung Ho, her most socially influential album since her comeback. One of its tracks, "Glitter in Their Eyes," again earned her a Grammy nomination. With the release of the double-disc anthology Land (1975-2002), Smith and Arista parted ways in 2002, and she later signed to new label Columbia, whose first album, Trampin, was released in the spring of '04. Smith's previous work, Horses, was released on a deluxe double-CD set when Arista released its 30th Anniversary Legendary Edition. Edition" when it was reissued as a deluxe double CD.
