What's the difference between applied mathematics and basic mathematics?

Applied mathematics, as its name implies, is biased towards application. It is often combined with practical directions such as image processing, data mining and neural network, so it is relatively easy to find a breakthrough point when writing a paper. Basic mathematics is pure theory, such as algebra, graph theory, group theory, geometry and so on. It's not so easy to write articles. We often have to read some foreign articles, because China is still lacking in basic mathematics.
