Are there still traditional realistic oil painting classes at art schools in France? I've heard that it's all about the avant-garde now. Where is the best place for me to learn traditional realistic oil painting? Thank you in advance. I am in France. I graduated from the oil painting department in China. I came to France because I am engaged in contemporary art.

French art schools teach contemporary art across the board. There are oil painting classes, but they're not called oil painting classes, they're called drawing classes, and you can use whatever materials you want. If you paint traditionally, you won't get into an art school, they'll tell you that they can't teach you, that what you're painting is from the last century and earlier.

There may be some private studios where you can learn, but they are hard to find.

You can go to Italy if you want to learn traditional.

In fact, I think you can learn to be very realistic in China, lol. Many foreigners come to China to buy realistic portraits and landscapes.
