All about Qu Yuan

Biography of Qu Yuan:

Born in 340 BC at Zigui, Danyang, Chu, Qu Yuan was surnamed Mi, Qu, with the name Ping, the character Yuan, and the name Zhenzhe and the character Lingjun. He was a descendant of Qu Chuan, the son of King Wu of Chu, Xiong Tong.

When he was a young man, he was well educated, knowledgeable and ambitious. In his early years, he was trusted by King Huai of Chu, and served as the left disciple and daofu of Sanlu, who was also in charge of internal and foreign affairs.?

Advocating for good governance, he advocated the internal appointment of talents and the cultivation of laws and regulations, while externally, he advocated the alliance of Qi against Qin. He was exiled to the northern part of Han and the Yuan-Xiang valley because he was ostracized and slandered by the nobles. After Ying's capital of Chu was destroyed by the Qin army, he sank himself into the Miluo River and was martyred in the name of his country.

Wu Yuan was the first great patriotic poet in Chinese history, the founder of Chinese Romantic literature, the founder and representative writer of Chu Rhetoric, who opened up the tradition of vanilla beauty, and was regarded as the ancestor of Rhetoric and Chinese Poetry.

In the eleventh year of King Blush, Qu Yuan wandered north of Han (above the Han River, in the area of Xixia and Xichuan in present-day Nanyang, Henan). These rumors would harm the interests of Chu, which could not be tolerated by a man of uprightness and righteousness, and so Qu Yuan composed Li Sao in his sorrowful and pensive thoughts.

In the sixteenth year of King Blush of Zhou, Qu Yuan, who had by this time returned from his exile in the north of Han, together with Zha Ju and others, urged King Huai not to go to the meeting, saying: Qin, a country of tigers and wolves, is not to be trusted, and it would be better to do nothing.

But King Huai's youngest son, Zi Lan, was afraid of losing the Qin king's favor, so he tried his best to encourage him to go. As soon as he entered the Wuguan Pass, he was detained by the Qin army and was taken to Xianyang, where he was threatened to cede the counties of Wu and Qianzhong.

When King Huai of Chu was kidnapped and taken to Xianyang, the king was welcomed back by Qi, who made Prince Heng the king of Zhixiang, with Duke Zilan as the magistrate, and refused to cede land to Qin, which then attacked Chu, defeating the army, beheading 50,000 people, and capturing sixteen cities.
