Cantonese Opera, also known as Cantonese Opera and Guangdong Opera, is the largest opera type in the Cantonese dialect area of ??Guangdong and Guangxi. Originated in Foshan, it is sung in Cantonese dialect. It is one of the traditional operas of the Han nationality and a representative work of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind. Cantonese Opera was formed in Guangdong, and was later introduced to Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Cantonese Opera is performed in places with overseas Chinese living in Southeast Asia and America.
During the Xianfeng and Daoguang years of the Qing Dynasty, local troupes in Guangdong used "Banghuang" (Xipi, Erhuang) as the basic tune in their performances, including Gaoqiang, Kunqiang and Guangdong folk music and current tunes, and used "Stage Mandarin" as the basic language , occasionally mixed with Cantonese dialect, gradually formed Cantonese opera. Around 1912, Cantonese opera performances basically switched to Guangzhou dialect, and the performance system became increasingly perfect. Folk tunes began to be interspersed with banghuang, and falsetto singing was changed to "flat throat" singing.
Representative repertoire of Cantonese Opera
The traditional repertoire of Cantonese opera in the early days mainly included the so-called "Eighteen Books of Jianghu" such as "A Handful of Snow", "Two Plum Blossoms", "Sanguantang", "Four Jinshi" and "Five Admissions". Later, "Huanghua Mountain" and "Xihe Hui" appeared. The "Eighteen New Jianghu Books" such as "Double Marriage" and "Fucked" and the "Eighteen Grand Show Books" such as "Su Wu Sheep Sheep" and "Daiyu Burial Flower". Other representative plays include "Platinum Dragon", "Burning Epang Palace", "Pinggui Farewell Kiln", "Lotus Lantern", "Luo Cheng Writes a Book", "Feng Yi Pavilion", etc.
Leizhou Peninsula's main repertoire is Jianghu Shiba, such as "Three Degrees of Plum Blossoms", "Seven Sages", "Charcoal in the Snow", "Seven-Shaped Paper", "Huanghua Mountain", etc. While inheriting and preserving traditional repertoire, the Xia Si Fu Cantonese Opera Troupe also made innovations to form local characteristics in script structure and performance.
