Why do many Buddhist schools call themselves "Five Minds"?
Declaration ?abda vidyā: language, philology, exegesis, literature, etc., i.e., the ability to express language and to write and compose. Inner Ming adhyātma vidyā: doctrine, philosophy, the first of the Five Minds, i.e., for Buddhists, the Sutra, Law, and Theory Tripitaka. For Buddhists, it is the Sutras, the Laws and the Treatises. For Bodhisattvas who have already confirmed their realizations, internal illumination facilitates their own practice as well as helping others to become enlightened. The hetu vidyā: Logic, the art of argumentation, by which a Bodhisattva who has attained the internal illumination can refute the dissenting arguments of laymen, convince those who do not believe in the Dharma, and strengthen the faith of those who already believe. Cikitsā vidyā: Medicine, pharmacology, and even forbidden mantras that help to strengthen the body and heal the color and physical ailments of others, and to save sentient beings. Craftsmanship Ming ?ilpa-karma-sthāna vidyā: art, science, craftsmanship, agriculture, etc., i.e., the skills needed in daily life.
Scholars who are proficient in the five mings can enjoy the title of Panchita.
