Three major customs of the Lower Yuan Festival
The three major customs of the Lower Yuan Festival are: ancestor worship, praying, and eating bean paste buns.
1. Ancestor Worship
Ancestor worship is one of the important customs of the Lower Yuan Festival. On this day, people will set up an incense burner in their homes or ancestral halls to enshrine the tablets or photos of their ancestors. Then, they will light joss sticks and candles to pray to their ancestors and express their nostalgia and respect for them. At the same time, they will also burn paper money, paper clothes and other items for their ancestors as a sign of filial piety.
2. Prayer
The Lower Yuan Festival is also a good time to pray. People will go to temples, Taoist temples and other places on this day to pray to the gods for peace, health and happiness. They will burn incense and bow before the statues of the gods, and piously make their wishes. Some people also write down prayer cards and hang them on the prayer tree, looking forward to the blessing and shelter of the gods. The custom of praying reflects people's desire and pursuit of a better life.
3, eat bean paste buns
Next Yuan Festival also has an interesting food custom, is to eat bean paste buns. Bean paste buns are filled with red bean paste and steamed with flour skin on the outside. Red beans have the symbolic meaning of warding off evil spirits and epidemics in traditional culture, while the buns represent the delegation of roundness and harmony. Therefore, eating bean paste buns is to pray for peace and health as well as to celebrate the beautiful moment of reunion and harmony.
Origin of the Haewon Festival
The origin of the Haewon Festival is related to Taoism. There are three Taoist officials: the Heavenly Official, the Earthly Official, and the Water Official, which are called the Heavenly Official of the Upper Yuan who bestows blessings with nine airs, the Earthly Official of the Middle Yuan who pardons sins with seven airs, and the Water Official of the Lower Yuan who relieves sins with five airs.
The birthdays of the three officials are the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, the Heavenly Officials bestow blessings, the 15th day of the 7th month, the Earthly Officials forgive sins, and the 15th day of the 10th month, the Water Officials solve problems, and these three days are known as the "Festival of the Upper Yuan", "Festival of the Middle Yuan", and "Festival of the Lower Yuan". These three days are called the "Upper Yuan Festival", "Middle Yuan Festival" and "Lower Yuan Festival". The Lower Yuan Festival, which is the hour when the Shui Guan relieves Yang Gu Di Jun of his troubles, is commonly known as the Lower Yuan Day.
The Lower Yuan Festival has its own unique seasonal foods. In Beijing, for example, when the Lower Yuan Festival is celebrated, every family will make "bean paste bones". The "bean paste" is the "bean paste filling" made of red beans. It is a Beijing snack called "Douzha Baozi".
