Port Rockroy Post Office is located in Gudi Island on the west side of Antarctic Peninsula, and receives about 1 1.8 million visitors every year from October to March of the following year. Apart from the geographical advantage of being located in the Antarctic, this post office also has a great feature, that is, penguins are everywhere, so it is also called "Penguin Post Office".
The post office base in Port Rockroy is British territory. Established in 1944, this famous Penguin Post Office is managed by the British Antarctic Heritage Trust and operates as a British research station, which is responsible for running museums and gift shops to receive tourists. The profit of this shop will be used to support the restoration of other historical sites in Antarctica.
The trust will also conduct an environmental study to monitor the impact of tourists on the environment, including counting the number of penguins and penguin babies on the island. According to the region's website, this study helps to control the number of tourists on the island and provides a basis for the guiding principle of "ensuring the environment is properly protected".
