Smaller pieces are eaten when they meet larger pieces; identical pieces die when they meet; sappers and bombs can remove mines, other pieces can't, and non-removable pieces are eaten when they meet mines; any piece can eat the flag; bombs die when they meet any piece.
The game starts
Both sides take their own pieces to lay out. For dark moves, the pieces are up and out of sight (a referee is needed); for light moves, the pieces are face up.
Bombs cannot be placed in the first row, mines can only be placed in the last two rows, and flags can only be placed in the base camp.
