Basic forms of area navigation
In its simplest form, VOR/DME RNAV allows pilots to electronically VORTAC to more convenient locations. Once the electronics have been rearranged, they are referred to as waypoints. These waypoints are described as a combination of selected directions and distances within the VORTAC service area used. With the VOR as the center, distance and bearing can be used to determine the location of any unique point within its service area, which can be defined as a waypoint. These waypoints allow flight on a straight course between almost any origin and destination without regard to the bearing of the VORTAC or the existence of a route.
Although the actual capabilities and methods of operation of the VOR/DME RNAV units differ, the basic principles of operation are the same. It is strongly recommended that pilots study the manufacturer's operating instructions and receiving instructions before using VORDME RNAV or any unfamiliar navigation system. Operational information and limitations should also be found on placards or in the appendix section of the aircraft flight manual/pilot's operating handbook (AFM/POH).
