Why are Greek weddings usually held on Sundays?
Ancient Greece was a capitalist democracy with no monarchy, and people valued individual equality and personal rest and relaxation. Saturdays and Sundays were the agreed-upon time for rest, and most of the events people organized were held during this time.
And according to Greek etiquette, the ideal day to get married is after five o'clock in the evening on weekends. In rural and mountainous areas, people often choose to hold a wedding on a Sunday in March or during the agricultural season, which is traditionally considered to be the "auspicious day" for celebrations.
One of the characteristics of Greek weddings is that all the preparations before the wedding are handled by the woman, which is very interesting about the layout of the new room: the bride to hand-embroidered new white sheets to make the bed, and then invited friends and relatives to throw the gold, coins, and rice in the new couple's bed, to bless them with a rich and everlasting marriage. In addition, on the same day, several children are allowed to jump and play on the bed, wishing the bride an "early birth".
The wedding takes place in the church, where the priest puts on the wedding rings of the bride and groom, and the maid of honor or best man crosses the crowns over the couple's heads three times. The priest then asks the groom to hold the bride's hand and feeds them Holy Communion and holy wine, a symbol of the blood of Jesus, three times.
This completes the ceremony and allows the bride and groom to begin their new life together. As the newlyweds step out of the church onto the limousine, family and friends sprinkle rice on their heads to bless the rich and eternal marriage.
The wedding feast is followed by a revelry, with the congregation dancing to their hearts' content, both folk dances and social dances. When they were happy, someone lifted a plate and threw it to the ground, and people shouted "Oba", and dozens of plates were thrown at a wedding. In Greek, "let's fall" means "let's be merry", and the revelry ends at midnight.
