What does "Coupe" mean?

Couper is French coupé, which evolved from Coupé, meaning two-seater carriage. Later, Coupe became synonymous with two-seater or 2+2-seater fixed-roof sports car.

2+2 seats refer to two common seats in the front row and two in the back row that are not commonly used. In 1950s, sports cars were sometimes called convertible sports cars, but since 1960s, sports cars have been specially used to represent vehicles with fixed roofs.

The appearance of the four-door coupe broke the definition of the traditional coupe and kept the smooth lines of the traditional coupe, but two doors were added, making the two seats in the back row no longer pet seats.

The pioneer of modern four-door coupe is seemingly conservative Mercedes-Benz, which combines coupe and car, giving CLS coupe-like lines while retaining the four-door design.
