Snake, a reptile without limbs. There are about 2500 kinds of snakes. Some live in the sea, some in fresh water, but most live on land. Land snakes may burrow underground, or live in trees or crevices in rocks. Snakes range in size from 4-inch (10cm) blind snakes to 30-foot (9m) or longer reticulated pythons. Snakes usually benefit humans by killing unwanted insects and rodents. Snakeskin is used to make shoes, handbags and other items. Almost all snakes bite to protect themselves or get food, but only a few are poisonous. Bites of some poisonous species are fatal to human beings.
