This book talks about China's history, not only about the Opium War, but also about Wei Yuan's "The Illustrated Guide to the Sea and the Country", in which he says, "Learn from the barbarians to rule them.

But the larger part of the book focuses on the events that followed the founding of the new China in 1949. In his preface, Kissinger says that President Nixon sent him to China about this time four decades ago, and that he has been there more than 50 times since then, and that like many who have visited China, "I admire the Chinese people, and their patience, their acumen, their sense of family, and the culture they represent."
