The three stages in the process of attitude and character formation are conformity, identification, and internalization.

Compliance includes both subordination and obedience. Conformity is a change in the behavior or beliefs of group members in response to real or imagined group pressure, and its accompanying behavioral patterns. For example, a parent who sees other parents enrolling their children in remedial classes and then enrolls their own children in various remedial classes is a form of subordination. Obedience is a social phenomenon in which individuals behave according to social requirements, group norms, or the will of others.

The behavior at the stage of obedience is blind, passive, unstable, and changes with the situation. The level of attitude and character in this stage is low, but it is an indispensable stage, the beginning link in the establishment of attitude and character.

Identification is the active acceptance of the influence of others in thoughts, feelings, attitudes and behaviors, so that one's own attitudes and behaviors are close to those of others. Identification is essentially the imitation of a role model, and its starting point is to try to be consistent with the role model. The behavior of students at this stage is characterized by a certain degree of self-consciousness, initiative and stability.

Internalization refers to the alignment of ideas and opinions with those of others. The ideas that one agrees with and one's original views and beliefs are fused together to form a complete value system. For example: when someone sees a red light, he immediately thinks that he can't run the red light, and if running the red light will threaten his own life and the safety of others, then even if he sees that other people are running the red light, he won't run the red light himself, and this phenomenon is internalization.

In the internalization stage, the individual's behavior has a high degree of self-consciousness and initiative, and firmness, manifested in the "rich and powerful, poor and lowly can not be moved, the mighty can not be bent". At this point, stable attitudes and virtues are formed.
