The way authority is exercised in mystified organizations is based on the personality of the individual leader.
One of the main elements of Weber's theory of bureaucracy is based on the worship and superstition of individuals, such as religious prophets, military and political leaders, and on the superhuman abilities, heroism, and exemplary character of these people. Weber used the term "charisma" to describe the personality of the individual leader. By means of this characteristic, the leader becomes an enigmatic figure who transcends mortals and is endowed with supernatural and superhuman powers, or at least with extraordinary powers or talents.
For Weber, prophets, messiahs, and political leaders fall into this category of mystified figures, while Jesus, the Pope, and Napoleon are regarded by Weber as mystical figures with such authority. Their organizations consisted of themselves and a group of disciples. The disciples acted as intermediaries between the masses and the leaders. According to Weber, the typical "mystical organization" was a small revolutionary movement in religious or political form.
Authority Structure Theory and Analysis of Organizational Types
Weber's study of organizational forms begins with the basic question of why people obey orders and do what they are told, and thus raises the question of legitimate rule and types of authority. Weber begins by analyzing the role of authority in maintaining and dominating a social organization. He states that any kind of organization is based on some form of authority, that authority eliminates chaos and brings order, and that an organization without authority cannot achieve its organizational goals.
Weber distinguishes between different types of organizations. He argued that there are three types of legitimate authority, from which three different forms of organization emerge. Namely, the "mystified organization," the "traditional organization," and the "rationalization-a-legitimate organization." Each of these forms of organization implies its own unique governing body or system of governance.
