Successive governments in post-independence Myanmar have conferred the title of "Famous Artist" on outstanding dancers. 1952-1953, Song and Dance Schools were set up in Yangon and Mandalay, specializing in training modern Burmese dancers, and there are also professional dance groups in Myanmar.

The Yangon Music and Dance Academy was established in 1952, with a three-year course of study. It has 3 departments: vocal, instrumental and dance. The Mandalay School of Music and Dance was also established in 1952 and has a dance department and a music department. Both the School of Dance and the Department of Theater Arts take basic dance as a compulsory course. All students in the Department of Theatre Arts study dance and choreography both theoretically and practically over a period of four years.

The Myanmar National Dance Theatre was founded in 1962, and the troupe has been acclaimed for its cultural performances during major festivals in Myanmar and special performances during visits of foreign leaders to China, India, Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, North Korea, Australia and the Soviet Union. The dance dramas and plays performed by the Myanmar National Song and Dance Drama Troupe have been well received at home and abroad, and have a certain influence in Southeast Asia and even in the world.

Myanmar Cultural Theatre Troupe is organized and managed by the Ministry of Culture, which preserves and performs Myanmar's traditional dances, dramas and songs.
