Who is Feng Jicai?

Feng Jicai was born in Tianjin in 1942, a native of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. He is a contemporary Chinese writer, painter, cultural scholar and professor. In literature, he is a representative writer of the "scar literature" that emerged after the Cultural Revolution, and his "cultural reflection novels" have had a far-reaching impact on the literary world since 1985. His works cover a wide range of subjects and genres, and have been published in nearly 100 collections. His representative works include Ah! , The Carved Pipe, The Tall Woman and Her Short Husband, The Divine Whip, Three Inch Golden Lotus, The Pearl Bird, Ten Years of a Hundred People, Strange People of the Common World, In the Midst of the Rapids, In the Whirlpool, and many others. His works have been translated into more than ten languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Korean, and Vietnamese, and more than forty various translations have been published overseas.

Feng Jicai, who is also a painter, has published a variety of large-scale collections of paintings, and has held solo exhibitions in major cities in China, and in Austria, Singapore, Japan, the United States and other countries. He has been called "the representative of modern literati painting" by critics for his painting skills that are consistent with both Chinese and Western painting and his subtle and far-reaching literary mood.

Feng is also a contemporary cultural scholar. In the past two decades, he has devoted himself to the protection of urban history and culture and the rescue of folk culture. He has advocated and presided over the rescue project of China's folk cultural heritage, and is committed to promoting the protection of traditional villages, which has had a wide impact on contemporary Chinese society.

At present, he is an honorary member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, honorary chairman of the China Association of Folk Literary and Artists, Counselor of the State Council, director of the Feng Jicai Institute of Literature and Art at Tianjin University, professor, doctoral supervisor, deputy head of the leading group of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List Evaluation Work and director of the Expert Committee, and director of the Expert Committee for the Protection of Traditional Villages in China, among others. He has served as Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy, Vice Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Chairman of the China Folk Literary Artists Association, Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Novel Society, Standing Committee Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Chairman of the Tianjin Federation of Literary and Art Circles, among other positions.
