Why is Mazu called the protector of the sea?
Mazu is the folk incarnation of Lin Moniang. Lin Moniang was the sixth daughter of Lin Yuan in Meizhou, Putian, Fujian. She was born in the first year of Jianlong in the Song Dynasty. She did not hear her cry after she was born, so she was named Lin Mo, which means silent woman.
