The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanyang Festival and Chongwu Festival, is an important traditional festival in China. The origin of Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to the Warring States Period in China more than 3000 years ago. The minister of Chu at that time offended the king at that time and was banished to Yueyang Tower. Qu Yuan was so miserable that he threw himself into the river on the fifth day of May to show his loyalty. Later, in order to commemorate Qu Yuan, people held dragon boat races and ate zongzi on this day, which gradually formed the tradition of Dragon Boat Festival.
Traditional customs of Dragon Boat Festival
There are many traditional customs in the Dragon Boat Festival, the most representative of which are dragon boat racing and eating zongzi.
Dragon boat race is one of the most distinctive activities of the Dragon Boat Festival. It is said that when Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, the local people were very sad, so they rowed on the river to find Qu Yuan's body. Later, this activity evolved into the form of dragon boat race. The dragon boat race is shaped like a dragon, with a dragon head at the bow and a dragon tail at the stern. In the competition, the players should try their best to paddle and cross the finish line at the fastest speed.
Eating zongzi is also one of the traditional customs of Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi is steamed in bamboo leaves with glutinous rice, meat, egg yolk, bean paste and other ingredients. On the Dragon Boat Festival every year, people eat zongzi to commemorate Qu Yuan. When eating zongzi, you will also drink a kind of wine called realgar wine to ward off evil spirits and avoid epidemics.
Our handwritten newspaper
After understanding the cultural connotation and traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival, our third-grade pupils began to make handwritten newspapers to show our creativity and ideas.
First of all, we drew a dragon boat on the handwritten newspaper with colored pencils, and the bow and stern were decorated with dragon heads and tails, which was very vivid. Then, we cut out different colors of zongzi with colored paper and put them on handwritten newspapers. Finally, we wrote down the origin and traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival in the handwritten newspaper, as well as our feelings and blessings for this festival.
Our handwritten newspaper not only shows our creativity and ideas, but also gives us a deeper understanding of the cultural connotation of the Dragon Boat Festival. In the end, our handwritten newspaper won the first prize, which is recognition and encouragement for our efforts and creation.
