Tang Poetry Classics and Chinese Cultural Traditions Er Ya Lesson 8.

Er Ya is a work of rhetoric literature, first included in the Han Shu - Yi Wen Zhi, but without the author's name. The work contains a relatively rich collection of ancient Chinese words. It is not only the ancestor of the dictionaries, but also the canonical books - the scriptures, which are included in the Thirteen Classics. It is a core component of traditional Han Chinese culture.

Er Ya is the first dictionary, "Er" means "near" (later written as "near"), "Ya" means "correct". "Er" means "near" (later written as "near"), "Ya" means "right", and here it refers to "elegant language", i.e., the standard language that is in line with the norms in terms of phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. The meaning of "Er Ya" is to approach and conform to the elegant language, that is, to interpret ancient Chinese words and dialect words in elegant and correct words, so that they are close to the norm.
