China's islands

An island is a small area of land surrounded by water. China has an area of more than 500 square meters of nearly 6500 islands, in addition to Hainan Island, Taiwan, the two large islands and Hong Kong, Macao and its islands, the other islands of the total surface of more than 6,600 square kilometers, the island coastline of more than 14,000 kilometers, of which about 85% of the distribution of the mainland south of Hangzhou Bay near the coast and the South China Sea. There are more than 400 islands with permanent residents, and the area of these islands accounts for more than 90% of the total island area. China's islands can be divided into four categories according to their causes: mainland islands, alluvial islands, volcanic islands and coral islands. Mainland island is originally part of the mainland, and later due to crustal subsidence or sea rise and the formation of, such as Taiwan, Hainan Island and so on. Alluvial islands are mainly due to the river sedimentation in the estuary, such as Chongming. Volcanic island due to underwater volcanic eruptions of magma material accumulated, such as the fire mountain, Penghu Islands. Coral island by reef-building coral skeletons and other shells piled up, generally not beyond the surface of the sea, and the area is small. The South China Sea is full of coral islands. China's largest island is Taiwan, including the main island of Taiwan, the Penghu Islands, Orchid Island, Fiery Island, including the size of ***87 islands, an area of 35,989 square kilometers. Hainan Island is the second largest island in China, with an area of 32,200 square kilometers. Among the South China Sea islands, Zengmuqiansha is the southernmost island in China's territory. Chongming Island is the third largest island in China, with an area of 1,083 square kilometers. Zhoushan Islands is the largest archipelago off the southeastern coast of China, consisting of more than 600 islands of various sizes, with a total area of 1,200 square kilometers in Zhoushan Islands. The main islands are Shengsi, Shengshan, Daishan, Dachangtu, Zhoushan, Putuoshan, Zhujiajian, Taotao, Jintangshan and Liuhengdao, etc. Zhoushan Island is the largest, with an area of 524 square kilometers, which is the fourth largest island in China. Donghai Island is located in the south of Zhanjiang City, an area of 286 square kilometers, is China's fifth largest island.

In 1996, China's first comprehensive survey of island resources, which lasted eight years, was concluded. The surveyed islands with an area of more than 500 square meters have more than 6,500 islands nationwide (excluding islands in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), with a coastline of more than 12,000 kilometers, and 433 inhabited islands, with a population of about 4.53 million. The results of this survey also show that China has more small islands and fewer big ones, more uninhabited islands and fewer inhabited ones, and more water-starved islands and fewer watered ones.

China's islands (islands of China) China **** has more than 6,000 islands of various sizes, with a total length of more than 14,000 kilometers of island coastline. According to their causes can be divided into 3 categories: bedrock islands, alluvial islands, coral reef islands. The East China Sea accounts for about 60% of the total number of islands, the South China Sea accounts for about 30%, and the Yellow and Bohai Seas account for about 10%.

Bedrock islands composed of bedrock islands accounted for more than 90% of the total number of islands in China, they are subject to the control of the new Huaxia tectonic system, most of the north-north-east direction, in the form of archipelagos or islands for regular distribution. Taiwan Island and Hainan Island are the two largest bedrock islands in China.

Taiwan Island Taiwan Island covers an area of 35,780,000 square kilometers, China's first large island. The island of mountains accounted for 2/3, plains accounted for 1/3. Taiwan is geologically and tectonically located in the western Pacific island arc belt, the Oligocene to the Pliocene by the trough back into the young fold belt, so the island of new tectonic movement is strong, frequent seismic activity, the Quaternary Ice Age when the low sea, Taiwan was once connected to the mainland. Topographically, Taiwan is characterized by plains and plateaus in the west and mountains in the east. The main mountain ranges are the Taitung Coastal Range, the Central Range, the Yushan Range, and the Alishan Range, with the highest peak, the main peak of Yushan, standing at 3,997 meters above sea level. The entire island and the mountain ranges are oriented north-north-east.

The bedrock coastal rivers of Taiwan Island are mostly developed along fractures. The Turbid Water Creek forms Taiwan's largest Xilu-Tainan alluvial plain, and the Danshui Creek forms the Pingtung Plain. The east coast of Taiwan is a fault coast, with straight shorelines and steep cliffs.

Hainan Island Hainan Island covers an area of 32,200 square kilometers, China's second largest island. Hainan Island terrain in the center of the high and low around, the water system is radial. Tableland plains account for 65% of the total area, 35% of the mountainous hills. The main peak of Wuzhi Mountain 1867 meters above sea level. Hainan Island was separated from the Leizhou Peninsula only in the early-mid Pleistocene. Basalt is widely distributed in the north of Hainan Island, and there are well-preserved volcanic craters. Along the coast developed a number of typical sand bar and lagoon harbor, the bay grows mangrove forests.

Other bedrock islands are distributed in the following areas:

① Liaodong Peninsula coast. Changshan Islands is located in the southeast coast of Liaodong Peninsula, *** more than 50 islands, can be divided into three island groups: north of Shicheng Islands, including Shicheng Island and large and small Wangjia Island, etc.; southwest of Changshan Islands, including large and small Changshan Island, Guanglu Island, etc.; south of the outer Changshan Islands, including the Ocean Island, Roe Deer Island, etc.. Among them, the largest of the Great Changshan Island, Ocean Island, the highest, 388 meters above sea level. The bedrock constituting the Changshan Islands is the Aurora-Cambrian stratum. Constrained by the tessellated structure, the islands are arranged in a certain pattern. In addition, there are some small islands scattered in Liaodong Bay.

②Shandong Peninsula coast. Temple Island Archipelago resides in the Bohai Strait, *** more than 30 islands, can be divided into three island groups: North Island Group has the South, North Huangcheng Island and large and small Chin Island; in the island group has the steely island, Gao Shan Island, etc.; South Island Group has the South and North Changshan Island and large and small Heishan Island, Temple Island, etc.. Among them, South Changshan Island is the largest, with an area of 20.4 square kilometers. The archipelago is mainly composed of former Aurora metamorphic rocks, and the islands are arranged in the same direction as the tectonic line, in a north-north-east direction. In addition, off the coast of Shandong Peninsula, there are Liugong Island, Tianheng Island and Lingshan Island, etc., and the development of a number of land-linked islands, such as Zhifu Island.

3 Zhejiang and Fujian coast. Zhoushan Islands is China's largest archipelago, consisting of large and small **** 1339 islands, of which Zhoushan Island is the largest, with an area of 472 square kilometers, China's fourth largest island. It is followed by Liuheng Island, Zhujiajian Island, Putuo Island, Daishan Island and Sijiao Island. The archipelago is the seaward extension of the Zhejiang and Fujian uplift zone, which is mainly composed of Mesozoic volcanic rocks. In addition to Zhoushan Islands off the coast of Zhejiang, there are still leek mountain, fish mountain and Nanji, Beiji Islands and so on. Fujian coast, there are mainly Taishan, four Brothers, Matsu and white dogs and other islands.

4 South China coast. Wanshan Archipelago is located outside the mouth of the Pearl River, **** there are more than 150 islands, mainly Hong Kong Island, Gaolan Island and the upper and lower Chuan Island, etc., and Tandang, Wanshan and other islands. These islands are mainly composed of granite from the Yanshan period. In addition, there are also islands scattered along the coast of South China such as Donghai, salammoniac, Weizhou, and Xiyang.

5 ⑤ The sea off Taiwan. Penghu Islands are located in the south of the Taiwan Strait, *** 64 islands, eight hooded waterway divided into its south and north two island groups. The north island group has pescadores, fishing and baisa island, form pescadores harbor; The south island group has eight mask island, flower island and big island and so on. The Penghu Islands are mainly volcanic islands composed of basalt with train reefs developing around them. The Diaoyu Islands are located about 100 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan, consisting of Diaoyu Island, Huangwei Island and Yiiwei Island. There are also Green Island and Orchid Island.

Alluvial islands rivers into the sea, sediment is often piled up near the mouth of the door to form sand islands, or alluvial islands.

Chongming Island is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, with an area of 1,060.5 square kilometers, making it the 3rd largest island in China and the largest alluvial island in China. In the 7th century AD, the mouth of the Yangtze River appeared Dongsha and Xisha, and then the sandbar wandered, the present Chongming Island is in the 16th century on the basis of Changsha, since the 1950s, strengthen the dike, stabilize the slump; at the same time, the enclosure of the sea to build rice fields, so that the area of Chongming Island has expanded by 80%. Chongming Island south of Changxing, Hengsha two sand islands was also a group of sandbars, 100 years ago this is still a few pieces of scattered estuarine marshes, the second half of the 19th century began to reclaim the sea, the last two or three decades to build dykes, artificial promotion of siltation, and gradually become the status quo.

The sand islands in the Pearl River estuary are either developed from the heart of the estuary, or blocked by bedrock islands, where sand accumulates in their hiding places. At first, the Pearl River Estuary had wide channels and scattered sandbars, but after reclamation and siltation, the channels were narrowed and gradually formed the Pearl River Delta with long channels. Nowadays, the sand islands are still stretching out, especially Wanhaisha and Lantern Sand, which are the fastest to silt up.

Taiwan's west coast sand island Taiwan's west coast turbid water stream and Tseng Wenxi delta outside the several columns of sand island is typical of the estuary by the development of the sand spit sand island. The sand islands are intermittently distributed, with lagoons between their inner sides and the land.

In addition, there are also sand islands distributed in the Luan River, Yellow River and Han River delta.

Coral reef islands coral reef islands are mainly distributed in the South China Sea. After the Miocene, submarine volcanic eruptions formed a series of volcanic reefs exposed to the sea surface, reef-building coral will grow around it, forming a train reef. Quaternary basin sinking and sea level rise and fall, so that the train reef evolved into a barrier reef, atoll. The islands of the South China Sea, consisting of islands, sands, reefs, and beaches, include the four major archipelagos of Dongsha, Zhongsha, Xisha, and Nansha, as well as Huangyan Island (see Islands of the South China Sea).

China's Islands

(Zhongguodedaoyu) China is a country with many islands. For a long time, the approximate number of islands has been "more than 5,000". In recent years, China's naval survey force based on the survey data compiled by China's first island book "China's coastal islands", which recorded an area of 500 square meters or more of the island of 6536, with a total area of more than 72,800 square kilometers, the island coastline length of 14,217.8 kilometers. Among them, 450 islands are inhabited. China's islands can be divided into four categories according to their causes: ① mainland island. It was originally part of the mainland, due to crustal subsidence or sea level rise, low-lying places were submerged by seawater, higher coastal land or hills exposed to the sea as islands. This type of island is generally closer to the land, geological structure and geomorphological form and the neighboring mainland close relationship, while the area is larger than other islands, high mountains. Such as China's Taiwan Island, Hainan Island, Pingtan Island, Zhoushan Islands, etc.; ② alluvial islands: mainly due to the river into the sea to carry sediment encountered in the tide of the top of the support, in the estuary near the accumulation of and become. Its material composition and geomorphologic form and the nearby plains are similar. Such as China's largest alluvial island Chongming Island. ③ Volcanic island: the accumulation of magma material from the eruption of undersea volcano. In China, it is mainly distributed around Taiwan Island, such as Fiery Island, Orchid Island, Cotton Island and most of Penghu Islands. ④ Coral Island: made up of the skeletal remains of reef-building corals and other shells of tropical marine organisms. This type of island is characterized by low topography, small area, and many do not exceed the sea surface. China's islands of the above four types, to the mainland island is absolutely dominant. And the distribution is very uneven. According to estimates, about 90% of the islands are concentrated in Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong Province and Liaoning, Shandong and Taiwan, which are second only to the above three provinces. China's island area is generally not too large, 90% of the island area of less than 1 square kilometer, more than 100 square kilometers of the island only 10 (see table below).

The most complete ranking of the size of China's islands

According to the National Comprehensive Survey of Island Resources conducted by the officials of the People's Republic of China*** and the People's Republic of China between 1988 and 1995, there are 6,536 islands of more than 500 square meters, with a total area of 80,000 square kilometers, and the total length of the islands' coastlines reaches 14,217.8 kilometers, with the inhabited islands numbering 450 of them are inhabited. Since then, the number of islands has been reduced due to the reclamation that has caused some of them to be connected to the land.

There are four main types of islands in China: mainland islands, alluvial islands, volcanic islands and coral islands.

1, Chinese island designation

The names of Chinese coastal islands vary according to the cause of the island and the custom of each place. Many of the traditional names are now suffixed with the words "island" or "mountain".

Islands -- commonly used in southern provinces, such as Gulangyu Island in Xiamen

Mountains -- more commonly used in the south than in the north, such as the Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang Province, the Wanshan Archipelago in Guangdong Province, and Lantau Island in Hong Kong

Sha -Mostly sandy islands, such as the Dongsha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, and Nansha Islands on the South China Sea

Rock (rocky head)-Changmen Rock in Shandong, Needle Rocky Head in Guangdong

Standoff- -mainly used in Zhejiang Province, such as Panzhi, historically written as "Yu"

Paozhao -mostly found in Zhejiang, now mostly embellished with the word "Island "

Lao - mostly found in northern China, such as Yue Tuo (月坨) and Clam Tuo (蛤坨) in Hebei

Tang (溏)-- Walking Horse Pond (走马塘) in Zhejiang

ISO --- exist in many places, such as Dongji in Zhejiang Province, Shimji Island in Shandong Province

Continental -- such as Cheung Chau in Hong Kong and Spider Island in Sanya

2. Major islands in order of size

Here are listed as the Greater China region All islands on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and in the four regions (Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) with an area of 10 square kilometers or more, excluding Jiangzhong Island. For islands that have disappeared due to reclamation or the construction of ponds (dykes) connected to the mainland or other islands, see "Islands that have disappeared" below. At the time of the first island survey, there were still Donghai Island, Dongshan Island, Jiangyin Island, Bazhouyu Island, Xiamen Island, Leidong Island and Dadeng Island with an area of more than 10 square kilometers, but these islands have now become part of the mainland through reclamation.
