Ancient Soap Making Methods and Recipes
Ancient soaps are natural, traditional handmade soaps that are usually made from vegetable oils and have no added chemicals. Here is a basic method and recipe for making antique soap:
Materials and tools:
- 500 grams of olive oil
- 200 grams of coconut oil
- 300 grams of palm oil
- 80 grams of lye (NaOH) for saponification
- 200 milliliters of water
- Fragrance or Essential oils (optional)
- Soap molds
- Kitchen weighing utensils (weighing cups, scales, etc.)
- Heat-resistant plastic containers or glass containers
- Blender, stirring stick, etc.
- Thermometer (stainless steel recommended)
Preparation:
1. Preparation: Wear protective goggles and gloves. gloves and make sure the work area is well ventilated.
2. Weigh the lye in a container and pour it slowly into the water and stir until dissolved. Be aware that heat and outgassing will occur as the lye is gradually added to the water. Be careful to avoid splashing while stirring. Allow the solution to cool to room temperature, ensuring that room temperature is a safe operating temperature.
3. Weigh the olive oil, coconut oil and palm oil in a separate container and mix well.
4. Heat the vegetable fats and oils to about 50°C and stir well.
5. Slowly pour the solution into the vegetable fats while stirring constantly until a homogeneous mixture is achieved.
6. Continue stirring until the temperature of the mixture drops to 45°C. At this point, if you plan to add flavors or essential oils, you can do so at this stage.
7. Pour the mixture into the soap molds and level the surface.
8. Leave to wait: Place the soap molds in an undisturbed area and leave for 24 to 48 hours to allow the soap to cure.
9. CUT AND DRY: Cut the cured soap into appropriate shapes and sizes and let dry in a well-ventilated area for 3 to 4 weeks. This will help to make the soap harder and more durable.
10. Finally, store the soap in a cardboard box or airtight container.
