Differences between the tribute system and the tribute trade system
The tribute system is a political order based on hierarchical relations, usually found in ancient state relations in East Asia. In this system, a small state pays tribute to the emperor of a large state as an expression of respect and obedience to the latter, while the large state protects and provides the necessary political and economic support to the small state. The tribute system was based on the expression of respect, obedience and subordination, and was a diplomatic means by which ancient China interacted with its neighbors.
The tribute trade system was a trade system based on the tribute system, combined with the concrete practice of economic activities. In this system, small countries paid tribute to China, which included specialties, artifacts, treasures, etc., and China reciprocated with economic, political or military support. The tribute trade system played an important role in ancient China's foreign trade and was an important way for China to engage in economic exchanges with neighboring countries.
In general, the tribute system paid more attention to political order and the relationship between superiority and inferiority, while the tribute trade system emphasized economic exchanges and mutual benefits.
