Comedy Opera of the English Comedy Opera
The earliest comic opera of the early 18th century was the English "Beggar's Opera," performed in London in 1728. The English preferred to call this type of opera a "ballad opera" because most of its music came from popular ballad tunes, with lyrics added and dialogue. The English comic opera signaled the end of the road for formal opera. It was the beginning of the transformation of European opera.
