Personally, I suggest that when someone is at home, water it manually. If it is really necessary to install an automatic sprinkler system, use the automatic sprinkler system, set a timing device and spray water automatically. If the balcony is very big, don't mind making the whole balcony full of water. Sprinkling irrigation is better. If the balcony is small and you don't want it to get wet everywhere, you can consider using drip irrigation. Personally, I prefer sprinkler irrigation.
