The so-called carbon sink is also called carbon sequestration. It refers to the process of capturing carbon and storing it safely instead of directly discharging CO2 into the atmosphere. The study of carbon sink began in 1977, but it didn't attract people's attention until recent years.

The carbon sequestration function of terrestrial vegetation is a natural carbon sequestration process. Compared with artificial carbon fixation, CO2 does not need purification, which saves the cost of separating, capturing and compressing CO2 gas. Taking afforestation as an example, its cost is far lower than that required by countries to adopt energy conversion strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
