Mei Lanfang's Personal Information
Mei Lanfang was an outstanding Peking Opera performer and cultural ambassador, touring the world, explaining the culture of Peking Opera, and greatly promoting traditional Chinese art and culture. In addition to this, he was also an excellent autodidact who was not only proficient in traditional opera, but also had an in-depth study of ancient Chinese culture, history and philosophy.
Meilanfang's achievements were highly appreciated by the Chinese government, which honored him as "Cultural Ambassador" in 1955, and by the Central People's Broadcasting Station, which selected him as one of the top ten masters of Chinese opera art in the 20th century in 1964. In addition, he received many other honors and awards, including being the first person to win the title of National Outstanding Film Performer and the only Peking Opera performer to be honored with the title of "Kui Shou Artist" before the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Mei Lanfang died on August 8, 1961, at the age of 67 after a long illness. His contribution to Chinese culture and traditional arts will live on in history.
