First of all, if you want to send and receive SMS on Mac Air, you need to update both iPhone and Mac to the latest system. The latest system on iPhone is iOS8 version, while the latest system on Mac is OS X 10. 10.2 version.

When we upgrade the systems on iPhone and Mac to the latest system version, we can start setting them up to connect together. First, you need to log in to iCloud service with the same Apple ID account on iPhone and Mac respectively.

Next, we need to open iMessage information service on iPhone and Mac respectively. First, we can turn on the "information" service function on the Mac.
In Settings-Info on iPhone, first open the iMessage information service, as shown in the figure.
After opening the iMessage service, please click the "Send and Receive" column, as shown in the figure.
Next, please click the "Login to iMessage with Apple ID" option, as shown in the figure.
Then please enter the same Apple ID account and password, and click the "Login" button to continue.
When we successfully log in to iMessage with Apple ID, please return to the information setting list and click the "SMS Forwarding" column, as shown in the figure.
Then you will see your Mac computer here, that is, the computer that logs in to iMessage service with Apple ID on the Mac. Click the switch to turn it on.
Then a verification window for SMS forwarding will pop up to connect your iPhone and Mac computer, as shown in the figure.
Then we go back to the Mac computer. At this time, we can see that a 6-digit random number verification code will pop up on the Mac to connect to the iPhone. Enter this verification code on the iPhone and you can get through.
When the SMS forwarding connection between iPhone and Mac is successful, you can see that the option switch is turned on.
After opening it, you can try to send any SMS on your Mac, including traditional SMS. I use Unicom's number. I send a short message code to Unicom's service number to check the current phone bill. We can see that it has been sent successfully and can be received normally. For iMessage information, of course, it is not a problem, and it can be synchronized with iPhone.
