The difference between Chinese and Western novels in characterization

There are obvious differences between Chinese and Western classical novels in the methods of characterization, which are mainly manifested in:

Classical Chinese novels pay attention to the dynamic process of writing the details of the characters and the characteristics of the action. This kind of dynamic and detailed narration enables classical Chinese novels to draw out the most characteristic charm of the characters in an "extremely frugal" way. Because of the need to extract details from dynamics and action, the psychological description of characters in classical Chinese novels is indeed much less than in Western novels, but classical Chinese novels are also combined with dynamic and action-oriented details in describing the complexity and subtlety of the characters' psychology.

Western novels, especially the critical realist novels after the second half of the 19th century in the West, on the other hand, select and refine the emotional details of the characters from their psychology and consciousness, forming the artistic characteristics of writing characters' deep consciousness and deep psychological motives that are distinctly different from those of classical Chinese novels.
