During the Liao Dynasty, the Beijing-West Ancient Road was an important trade route from Beijing to Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, because of the proximity of the western Beijing mining area, Sanjiadian Village has gradually become an important trading center for the coal industry along the route. The Tianli Coal Factory is one of the best-preserved and largest historical buildings in the village, and was described by Beijing Observer magazine as "the only most complete remnant of a coal factory from the Qing Dynasty in Beijing". It is also known locally as the "Yin Family Compound" because it is connected to the residence of the Yin family, who operated it. The complex and exquisite brick carvings are one of the characteristics of the ancient villagers' houses in the western part of Beijing, including birds and flowers, cityscapes, fishermen and woodcutters, etc. Because the Yin family is rich in the coal industry, there are also motifs related to the coal industry in the brick carvings of the Tianli Coal Factory. Stories circulating in the village say that during a special period of history, the villagers sealed the brick carvings with yellow mud, so that these exquisite works were spared and have survived to this day. Now many residential brick carvings, you can still see the yellow mud marks.

The brick carvings on the villagers' houses in Sanjiadian are one of the characteristics of the ancient houses in western Beijing, and the patterns often include bird and flower figures, cityscapes, fishermen and woodcutters, and so on.

Another large-scale historical building in the village is the Shanxi Guild Hall, which is located in the Sanjiadian Primary School with a history of 100 years, and was once used as an elementary school site for a period of time after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The village of more than a dozen ancient trees, also have two or three hundred years "old".

Sanjiadian Village has been selected as one of the second 15 historical and cultural preservation areas in Beijing, the first list of Chinese traditional villages and the first list of municipal traditional villages in Beijing. With the development of the city, only 2 kilometers away from the Mentougou city Sanjiadian village, the function of the village is also quietly changing.

The reporter observed and studied the ancient houses in Sanjiadian Village. Sanjiadian Village has been selected as one of the second batch of 15 historical and cultural protection zones in Beijing, the first batch of traditional villages in China, and the first batch of municipal traditional villages in Beijing.

A paper published in 2016 recorded that the household population of Sanjiadian Village was only 446. The vast majority of the village's permanent residents are migrant workers, as many as 10,000 to 20,000 people.

The demand for housing has brought no small challenge to the protection of the ancient village.
