What does "tatami" mean? Do you really understand?
We often hear the expression "tatami" in our life?
So do you really know what tatami is?
Some people will call this low bed "tatami", or transform the bay window into so-called "tatami". But this understanding is actually wrong and misinterprets the original intention.
It turns out that the word "tatami" originated from Japanese transliteration, but it should mean "mat, straw mat" in Chinese. A rectangular grid laid on the floor, as shown above.
So tatami is not a low bed, but a mat on the ground. Traditional or ancient Japanese people spread bedding on tatami and then slept, not a low bed.
