Why Nyonya shoes are slippers
One of the most important parts of Nyonya's dress culture is the Nyonya beaded shoe, also known as the "beaded shoe", or "Kasut Manik" in Malay, which is a handmade slipper embroidered by Nyonya themselves. Also known as "Kasut Manik" in Malay, they are handmade slippers embroidered by Nyonya.
The Nyonya learnt bead embroidery to make beaded shoes. Although the Nyonya did not know Chinese, they maintained the Chinese culture in terms of values and social customs, and still adhered to the rules of "male dominates the outside world, female dominates the inside world" as well as the "Three Obediences and Four Virtues", which at that time was the most important rule in the society. "In those days, the level of embroidery was also used as a criterion for measuring whether a Nyonya was a virtuous woman.
Origin of Nyonya:
The word "Nyonya" dates back to 600 years ago, when Zheng He traveled to the West for seven times during the reign of Emperor Zhu Di of the Ming Dynasty, but five of his trips took him through a place called the Straits of Malacca, which is why he left behind a number of palace maidens and soldiers in that place. He left a lot of courtesans and soldiers in that place, and these people settled down and intermarried with the local Malaysians.
After the marriage between the Chinese and the local Malaysians, the Malay language called their children Nyonya and Baba, and some people called them "Native Chinese" or "Strait Chinese".
